CHICAGO- United Airlines (UA) has announced a major capacity boost on its Denver (DEN) to Anchorage (ANC) route for summer 2026. The airline will increase flight frequency to four daily departures, doubling its current summer 2025 schedule.
This strategic expansion positions United to compete directly with Southwest Airlines’ (WN) upcoming entry on the same route, reinforcing its dominance in one of the longest domestic narrowbody markets in the United States.

United Denver to Anchorage Flights Double
The Denver–Anchorage connection, spanning 2,090 nautical miles (3,871 km), has been served by United since 1994.
Historically, the Star Alliance member operated up to three daily flights during limited peak periods between 2016 and 2018. However, in 2026, the airline plans its most extensive service ever.
According to Simple Flying, United’s latest schedule update shows four daily flights between June 26 and August 10, 2026, operated by the Boeing 737 MAX 8.
The aircraft features 166 seats, including 16 in domestic first class, 54 in Economy Plus, and 96 in standard economy.
This service expansion will make the Denver–Anchorage route United’s seventh-longest narrowbody flight from its Denver hub, following destinations such as Lihue, Kahului, San Juan, and Punta Cana.

Schedule and Seasonal Adjustments
The new schedule begins with two daily flights from May 21 to June 25, 2026. During the high-demand summer period, four flights will operate daily, gradually tapering to three flights in late August and two in September.
Planned Summer 2026 Schedule (Local Times):
| Route | Flight No. | Departure (Local Time) | Arrival (Local Time) | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Denver (DEN) → Anchorage (ANC) | UA 1 | 07:45 | 11:20 | Morning service |
| UA 2 | 11:30 | 15:05 | Midday service | |
| UA 3 | 16:00 | 19:35 | Afternoon service | |
| UA 4 | 20:20 | 23:54 | Evening service | |
| Anchorage (ANC) → Denver (DEN) | UA 5 | 05:15 | 12:32 | Early morning return |
| UA 6 | 12:15 | 19:35 | Midday return | |
| UA 7 | 16:00 | 23:22 | Afternoon return | |
| UA 8 | 23:45 | 07:02 (+1) | Overnight redeye service |
Compared to earlier schedules, the 07:45 and 16:00 departures from Denver are newly added, while the 19:00 flight shifts to 20:20. Southwest Airlines (WN) will also launch service from Denver at 18:50 and return at 23:20, signaling intense competition in this corridor.

Passenger Demand and Market Dynamics
Data from the US Department of Transportation (August 2024–July 2025) reveals United carried approximately 125,400 round-trip passengers on the Denver–Anchorage route, with an 81% load factor.
About 30% of passengers were local travelers, while 70% connected through Denver to other destinations.
July and August remain the strongest months, each recording over 16,000 passengers. However, with four daily flights in 2026, United may need to balance fares and capacity to sustain profitability during peak months.
Current sample fares for early July 2026 show United pricing around $732 round-trip, compared to Southwest’s higher base fare exceeding $1,100.
Industry observers note that United’s strategy likely aims to pressure Southwest out of the route. Should that occur, the carrier may later reduce frequencies to its traditional two daily flights once the competitive intensity eases.

Strategic Outlook
United’s Denver hub, shared with strong presences from Southwest and Frontier, is among the most competitive in the US market.
The expansion to Anchorage underscores United’s intent to defend its hub strength while capturing Alaska’s growing summer leisure demand.
The move also aligns with broader network optimization trends, where US carriers are deploying narrowbody aircraft like the Boeing 737 MAX 8 on longer domestic and near-international sectors to enhance flexibility and reduce operational costs.
