CHICAGO- Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg transformed into an impromptu flight attendant during a delayed United Airlines (UA) flight from Chicago O’Hare (ORD) to Traverse City, Michigan.
Weeks before leaving his current role, Buttigieg entertained passengers by walking the aircraft aisle and distributing snacks from a wicker basket, flagged PYOK.
United Flight Delayed
A fellow passenger captured the moment on Instagram, highlighting Buttigieg’s down-to-earth personality and sense of humor.
Dressed casually in sneakers and a light blue sweater, the secretary appeared to thoroughly enjoy his unexpected in-flight service role, while some passengers looked puzzled by his actions.
United Airlines flight UA440, a United Express service operated by regional carrier GoJet, experienced a substantial delay of one hour and 24 minutes.
Despite the extended tarmac time, the CRJ-550 jet’s pilots managed to partially compensate, ultimately landing in Traverse City just over an hour behind schedule.
Pete Buttigieg Advocacy for Betterment
Throughout his tenure, Buttigieg has been a vocal advocate for improving travelers’ rights. He credits the Department of Transportation’s 2022 campaign with compelling airlines to enhance service quality for passengers affected by delays and cancellations.
Pete Buttigieg’s Department of Transportation (DOT) has significantly transformed passenger rights across major US airlines.
The regulatory changes mandate that nearly every major carrier rebook delayed passengers on their own or partner airlines at no additional cost. Airlines including Alaska (AS), American (AA), Delta (DL), Hawaiian (HA), JetBlue (B6), and United now offer passengers alternative flight options without extra charges.
Most major airlines, excluding Frontier (F9), now provide hotel accommodations for overnight delays. All carriers, including Frontier, will supply refreshments for delays exceeding three hours.
The DOT’s new regulation requires airlines to issue full cash refunds to passengers who choose not to travel after experiencing substantial delays.
Junk Fees Rules Controversy
The department’s consumer-friendly initiatives have encountered legal challenges. A proposed regulation requiring airlines to display ancillary service fees (Junk Fees) upfront, such as checked baggage and seat costs, faces significant opposition from major US carriers.
United and other airlines have challenged the rule, resulting in a US Appeals Court temporarily halting its implementation pending a comprehensive lawsuit examining the DOT’s regulatory authority.
The DOT recently proposed compensation rules modeled after European standards, which would compel airlines to compensate passengers for significant flight delays or cancellations.
