KUALA LUMPUR- Due to a volcanic eruption at Mount Ruang in Indonesia, Malaysia Airlines (MH) will cancel multiple flights scheduled to/from KL International Airport (KUL) to Sabah and Sarawak on April 18, 2024.
In response to the eruption of Mount Ruang in the Indonesian Sulawesi Islands, causing widespread volcanic ash clouds impacting airspace and visibility in the region, the Civil Aviation Authority of Malaysia (CAAM) has identified this as a significant safety concern for aircraft and passengers.
Malaysia Airlines Cancels Flights
So far, the flag carrier of Malaysia has canceled 18 flights to/from Sabah and Sarawak.
For travel to and from Sabah:
- MH7420 (KUL-TWU)
- MH7421 (TWU-KUL)
- MH2612 (KUL-BKI)
- MH2621 (BKI-KUL)
- MH2710 (KUL-SDK)
- MH2711 (SDK-KUL)
- MH2610 (KUL-BKI)
- MH2611 (BKI-KUL)
- MH7404 (KUL-BKI)
- MH7405 (BKI-KUL)
For travel to and from Sarawak:
- MH2520 (KUL-KCH)
- MH2513 (KCH-KUL)
- MH2542 (KUL-KCH)
- MH2543 (KCH-KUL)
- MH2574 (KUL-MYY)
- MH2575 (MYY-KUL)
- MH2742 (KUL-BTU)
- MH2743 (BTU-KUL)
In light of the changing circumstances, Malaysia Airlines will maintain close oversight of developments. Additional information regarding flight cancellations will be posted here and relayed directly to impacted customers.
Simultaneously, the airline endeavors to assist passengers affected by flight cancellations by arranging alternative flights as the situation improves.
AirAsia Flight Cancellations
Due to the substantial disruption caused by this volcanic eruption to airline operations and in adherence to ensuring the safety of passengers and aircraft, AirAsia (AK) has decided to cancel flights to and from various destinations in accordance with CAAM Safety Information 09/2024, issued at 11:50 am.
Commencing today, April 18, 2024, at 10:00 am until April 19, 2024, at 8:00 am, flights to and from nine airports, including Kota Kinabalu, Tawau, Sandakan, Labuan, Miri, Sibu, Bintulu, Kuching, and Brunei, will be impacted by these cancellations.
During this period, AirAsia is dedicated to prioritizing safety and has communicated with all affected guests regarding the cancellations. Guests traveling to/from the affected destinations are advised to monitor their registered email and mobile phones for cancellation notifications.

However, ensuring the safety of our guests and crew is our top priority, and we appreciate their understanding and cooperation during this challenging time. We will closely monitor the situation and collaborate with relevant authorities, including CAAM, to evaluate when it’s safe to resume operations to affected destinations. Our senior executives and ground resources are fully dedicated to ensuring the safety of our guests and aircraft amid these circumstances, and we sincerely thank all our guests for their ongoing support and patience.”
In response to this weather event, AirAsia is offering the following options to guests whose flights have been canceled:
- Move Flight: Guests can make a one-time change to any new travel date within 30 days from the original departure date on the same route without any extra charges, subject to seat availability.
- Credit Account: Guests can retain the flight booking value in their Airasia Rewards member account for future travel with AirAsia. This credit can be redeemed within 730 calendar days (2 years) from the date of issuance, and the travel date of the new booking can be any date within the published flight schedule on airasia.com.
