SYDNEY- Savor your ham and cheese toasties now, as airport lounges are poised to experience increased traffic as Executive Traveller’s report reveals that Qantas (QF) is preparing to roll out a new budget-friendly subscription model for access to their exclusive terminal clubs (lounges).
This initiative aims to allow more travelers to enjoy both domestic and international lounges by paying a reduced monthly fee, mirroring the subscription models popularized by entertainment platforms like Netflix or Disney+. Ready for some Qantas and chill?
Qantas Subscription Model for Lounge
For those accustomed to flying in the premium cabins, it’s worth noting that Qantas presently offers Qantas Club members yearly packages ranging from $600 to $2000, accompanied by a one-time $99 joining fee.
However, a recent online survey conducted among the Qantas Research Panel indicates the airline’s intention to introduce a subscription model that offers “greater flexibility,” allowing members to “pay as they go and cancel at any time.”
The travel-oriented publication highlighted that the innovative approach to selling Qantas lounge access presents an effective strategy to engage the younger generation, accustomed to paying for subscription services.
Moreover, considering the anticipated challenging economic conditions, the prospect of smaller monthly payments is likely to be more appealing than a significant upfront lump sum.
Access for More Travelers
As of now, the pricing details for the monthly model have not been finalized, but its implementation is expected to make lounge access more economical for travelers.
However, this development has sparked concerns among existing members and frequent flyers, who are already anxious about the growing congestion.
“More people in the lounges?!? It’s already reaching a point where spending time in the terminal is more enjoyable,” remarked one individual, expressing reservations about the potential increase in lounge crowds.
Distinguishing Qantas Club Subscription Membership from Regular Membership
The subscription initiative will grant members entry to twenty-four Qantas Club and Qantas Regional Lounges situated across Australia, covering capital cities and major regional hubs.
Furthermore, participants will have the privilege of accessing Qantas International Business Class lounges in key cities worldwide.
However, as outlined in the survey, subscription memberships will be restricted to Qantas’ proprietary lounge network. Access to ‘partner’ lounges at international airports where Qantas lacks a presence is not part of the package.
Additionally, certain broader perks will be excluded, such as bringing in a guest, a higher checked baggage allowance, and the ability to utilize Qantas Points for last-minute ‘on departure’ business class upgrades.
This strategic move could be interpreted as a response to the competition posed by the Virgin Australia Lounge membership program, which is priced at a fixed AU$399 per year.
Notably, Virgin’s program accommodates one adult guest and three children, making it more family-friendly.
