LONDON- Flag carrier of the United Kingdom, British Airways (BA) Airbus A380 operating from Johannesburg (JNB) to London (LHR), returned back to JNB due to issues with landing gear.
According to a Twitter user, the flight BA56 made a heavy landing at JNB and tucked itself on Runway for some time. Similar to yesterday’s incident where the Emirates A380 EK9 flight got stuck at Gatwick Airport (LGW).
British Airways A380 Heavy landing at Johannesburg
According to Flight Radar 24, British Airways flight BA56 took off from JNB at around 5:45 PM UTC. Shortly after takeoff, the pilot noticed some issues with landing gear, and at 6:05 PM UTC, the flight made a U-Turn.
Some sources also stated that the cabin crew witnessed the burning smell inside the cockpit. This can be the result of some fire or technical issues with the engine.
But finally, at around 6:35 PM UTC, the flight made a heavy landing. The heavy landing term is used because the flight crew did not burn or dump extra fuel that they carried to reach London is not emptied. Following this, the A380 remained on the runway for almost 45 minutes.
After examining the situation, ground staff taxied the plane to the same gate from which the passenger embarked earlier.
One Twitter user reported that his father was traveling on this flight and shared the information. He reported, “BA A380 with a return to OR Tambo tonight with my dad onboard. Landing gear issue. Landed with a pretty full fuel tank.”
The aircraft involved in the incident is BA Airbus A380-841, registered as G-XLEH. Further, as per Planespotters.net, it is a 9.2-year-old aircraft; Airbus delivered it to BA in Oct 2014.
The airline also operates BA54 daily from JNB to LHR. The flight departed after BA56 arrived at the terminal and is en route to LHR.
More information is awaited on this serious incident, and we will keep you posted.
