NEW YORK- JetBlue (B6) announced today its decision to terminate the Northeast Alliance (NEA) with American Airlines (AA) following a court ruling against the alliance.
The NEA, aimed at bringing more of JetBlue’s innovative services to New York and Boston customers, has been deemed unsuccessful in its current form.
JetBlue American Alliance
JetBlue’s unique model, which has disrupted the industry for over 20 years, led to the creation of the NEA as a creative solution to overcome growth challenges imposed by external constraints.
The alliance resulted in several benefits for customers, including increased capacity, new routes and destinations, reduced fares, convenient JetBlue-American flight connections as an alternative to Delta and United, and expanded loyalty program benefits.
Despite the NEA’s positive impact, JetBlue strongly disagrees with the court’s ruling against the alliance. The airline maintains that the NEA has a pro-competitive effect and stands by its belief in the alliance’s benefits for both customers and the industry.
Difficult Decision Not to Appeal
After careful consideration, JetBlue has decided not to appeal the court’s determination and has initiated the termination of the NEA. This process will unfold gradually over the next few months.
The airline’s attention will now shift towards its proposed combination with Spirit Airlines, which is seen as the most effective opportunity to revolutionize the competitive landscape across the United States and extend the JetBlue Effect to more routes and markets.
The termination of the NEA renders the U.S. Department of Justice’s concerns about the partnership with a legacy carrier irrelevant.
JetBlue urges the DOJ to reconsider and support its plan to introduce a national low-fare competitor to the dominant “Big Four” airlines.
The airline emphasizes that the flying public deserves better than the current status quo and expresses its willingness to collaborate with the DOJ to address any remaining concerns.
JetBlue acknowledges the complexity of the NEA and the impact on thousands of customers who have already made travel bookings for the upcoming months.
The airline assures customers that no immediate changes will occur, and they can have confidence in their existing and future bookings. Earning and redeeming points and enjoying reciprocal loyalty benefits will also remain unaffected.
JetBlue is committed to protecting consumers throughout the wind-down process and will present its perspective to the court in the following weeks.
American Airlines’ Response
In response to JetBlue’s decision, American Airlines issued a statement expressing respect for JetBlue’s choice to focus on other antitrust and regulatory challenges.
Further, American Airlines intends to proceed with an appeal. Subsequently, emphasizes its belief that the NEA has been highly pro-competitive and that an incorrect judicial decision has resulted in an anti-competitive outcome.
The two airlines will continue collaborating to ensure a seamless travel experience for their mutual customers.
Despite the termination of the NEA, JetBlue remains optimistic about its future plans. Further, with momentum on its side, a clear organic growth strategy, and the forthcoming combination with Spirit Airlines, JetBlue aims to become a force for positive change in the industry on a national scale.
The airline looks forward to advancing its planned combination with Spirit and delivering enhanced travel options for customers across the country.
