Private firm GMR, which will operate the airport, the Goa state government, as well as the Civil Aviation ministry, are all ready to commission the facility, located in North Goa bordering Maharashtra, Chief Minister Pramod Sawant told.

The inauguration of the Mopa international airport in Pernem taluka will be tentatively commissioned on December 11 but an official announcement would be made after the confirmation is received from the Prime Minister’s Office, stated Chief Minister Pramod Sawant on Thursday.

Speaking to media persons on the sidelines of a function at the old Asilo hospital on Thursday in Mapusa, Chief Minister Pramod Sawant told, “We are yet to get the confirmation from Prime Minister’s Office over the date of commissioning of the Mopa international airport.
CM Pramod Sawant told that preparations for commissioning the new airport have been going on in full swing.
The Mopa airport work has also been going on war footing: facilities for flight arrivals and departures as also for luggage are almost ready.

The new airport, which has received the license for an aerodrome, will take off with domestic flights after the inauguration. Subsequently, it will launch international flight services, sources stated. The GMR Mopa airport promises to be smart and slick like the airports in metro cities.
The passenger terminal will offer a complete shopping experience with major brands taking up space. It will have an initial passenger capacity of 4.5 million passengers with plans to rise the capacity once 80% of the target is reached.
The integrated cargo terminal of the airport will have a capacity of 25,000 tonnes of cargo in Phase 1.
