A Wizz Air flight arrived incredibly close to the ground as it approached the runway in Skiathos, Greece. Spectators viewed the A321neo on a beach directly in front of the airport perimeter fence. The place is known for its low approaches due to the short nature of the island’s runway tips.
Wizz Air flight
Earlier this week, a Wizz Air flight reached dangerously close to many beachgoers on a short approach to land in Skiathos, Greece.
The aircraft barely cleared the airport perimeter fence before making a safe landing. The sight was both spectacular and terrifying for those on the ground. The aircraft arrived close enough that many people instinctively ducked or ran from it. No injuries have been said. The pilots held their course and managed to make a safe landing.
Currently, the airline has made no comments regarding the event. The reporter has reached out to Wizz Air for a comment and will update this article once it has been received. A regular occurrence airport at Skiathos has built a reputation for low approaches on short-final to land.
The airfield has a short runway and low-approach path, demanding large aircraft to arrive lower than at most other airports. This reputation has made this beach a very popular place for plane spotters. It offers up close shots of aircraft on landing. There have been many other aircraft that flew lower than usual through this area, capturing the attention of the public. However, this was undoubtedly one of the lowest. With present aircraft technology, this approach will remain the same for the foreseeable future. Due to the island’s geography, any runway extension would be challenging.
Wizz Air is one of many air carriers that regularly fly to Skiathos.
This particular flight was flown on the Airbus A321neo. One of the newest and biggest aircraft in the fleet. Due to the short runway in Skiathos, it is typical for airlines to fly some of their smallest aircraft on this route. This makes the A321neo one of the biggest aircraft to land at Skiathos regularly. This larger aircraft needs more runway to stop than a smaller aircraft would.
It is typical for aircraft to land as early as possible on this runway to ensure they can come to a safe stop before reaching the other end.
However, with this particular aircraft, stopping in time would be even harder, meaning that the pilots would likely come in even lower to land sooner than expected. In this situation, any growth in power could have been hazardous if administered at the last second, as many spectators would have absorbed the additional jet blast.
Regardless of how low the pilots intended to fly, it is irrefutable that they did an incredible job at making a safe landing in difficult circumstances.
Thank you
