Footage has surfaced of the wrecked Antonov An-225 being dismantled and transferred from Kyiv’s Hostomel Airport.
When the invasion began in late February, the large aircraft named Mriya was seriously damaged in the so-called Battle of Antonov Airport.
There were hopes that Mriya could be rebuilt after the attack, but subsequent photographs and videos of the aircraft revealed that the damage was likely too severe.
The level of the damage revealed in this new Twitter video looks to put an end to any remaining possibility of Mriya being rebuilt.
Rebuilding the second Antonov 225
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has indicated interest in completing the construction of the second An-225, but with an estimated cost of $800 million, it remains to be seen how realistic this aim is, and whether it will remain nothing more than a symbolic endeavour.
The $800 million price estimate is still less than the $3 billion originally quoted by Ukroboronprom, a Ukrainian defence company, for the rebuilding of Mriya when it was deemed to be feasible.
