LONDON, UK- London Gatwick Airport (LGW) has expanded its long-haul offerings with the addition of a new Ethiopian Airlines (ET) route to Addis Ababa (ADD), bringing the total number of long-haul destinations to 50.
The upcoming service will commence on November 21 and will operate thrice weekly. Notably, this marks Gatwick’s first direct flight to the Ethiopian capital since 2006, and it is part of a series of new long-haul routes introduced before the year’s end.
With these developments, the airport has now reinstated over 80% of its pre-Covid long-haul routes.
London Gatwick 50 Long-Haul Routes
After the successful launch of five new US routes from London Gatwick by Norse Atlantic (N0) earlier this year, the airline is gearing up to introduce services to Miami and Boston in September, followed by routes to Kingston, Montego Bay, and Bridgetown in October.
In the same vein, British Airways (BA) is set to initiate flights between London Gatwick and Accra, Ghana, in October. This comes on the heels of the airline’s recent additions of flights to Las Vegas and Vancouver earlier this year.
Air Mauritius (MK) is preparing for takeoff in October, offering daily flights to Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport.
With these developments, London Gatwick Airport has expanded its reach to a diverse range of long-haul destinations, encompassing the USA, Canada, the Caribbean, Africa, Asia, and the Middle East.
Executive Insights
According to Jonathan Pollard, Chief Commercial Officer of London Gatwick, reaching the milestone of 50 long-haul routes is a significant achievement for the airport.
While the airport takes pride in offering a wide array of short-haul routes within Europe, it is equally excited to provide passengers with connections to an expanding range of global destinations.
Pollard emphasized that these services are crucial for offering diverse travel options to London and the South East individuals. Subsequently fostering connections to various destinations worldwide.
These connections play a vital role in supporting local businesses and regional economic growth.
Whether it’s facilitating outbound trade or welcoming inbound tourism, the growth of London Gatwick’s long-haul network contributes significantly to the economic opportunities throughout the region.
Pollard expressed anticipation for the addition of Ethiopian Airlines to London Gatwick’s roster of carriers. He noted that the airline is just one among several that are looking to operate long-haul routes from Gatwick. Further underscoring the robust demand for slots at the airport.
New Runway Update
London Gatwick is committed to securing its future through strategic investments, and a pivotal step in this direction is the acceptance of its planning application for the Northern Runway by the Planning Inspectorate (PINS).
This application has entered the phase of detailed examination. The proposed plan is designed to have minimal environmental impact while delivering substantial benefits.
It aims to enhance the airport’s overall resilience and alleviate delays. Further, contribute considerably to the national and regional economy.
The plan’s implementation will usher in a positive transformation by facilitating trade, promoting tourism, and generating new employment opportunities.
