Airbus A350 pilots can earn substantially different salaries depending on their airline, rank, seniority, and annual flying hours. In the United States, Delta Air Lines (DL) provides a useful benchmark because its A350 pilots fall under a publicly available widebody pay scale, with experienced captains earning nearly $484,000 in annual base flying pay at 1,000 credited hours.
However, the aircraft itself does not determine a pilot’s salary. An Airbus A350 captain at a major US airline can earn considerably more than a first officer or a pilot operating the same aircraft for a European or Asian carrier. Contract agreements, retirement contributions, profit-sharing payments, and additional allowances also influence total compensation.

A350 Pilot Salary Differences
There is no single worldwide salary scale for Airbus A350 pilots. Airlines negotiate separate employment agreements, and their pay structures vary according to experience, seniority, and responsibilities.
Delta’s 2026 contract offers a useful illustration of the differences between first officers and captains. The airline groups the A350 with its other widebody aircraft, including the Airbus A330 and Boeing 767, 777 and 787, under the same hourly pay structure.
According to the published 2026 pay figures, a first officer starts at $125.52 per hour, while a captain receives $443.85 per hour in the first year. By the 12th year, the respective hourly rates reach $330.44 and $465.13.
The following figures show the estimated annual base flying pay at 1,000 credited hours.
| Years of service | First officer | Captain |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | $125,520 | $443,850 |
| 2 | $239,410 | $447,450 |
| 5 | $293,790 | $458,400 |
| 12 | $330,440 | $465,130 |

These figures demonstrate the substantial difference between the two cockpit positions. A captain receives higher compensation because of command responsibilities, while first officers gradually progress through the airline’s seniority-based pay scale.
Delta’s first-year first officer rate is also notably lower than its second-year rate because the initial rate applies across its aircraft fleets. Consequently, the aircraft type alone does not determine how much a newly hired pilot earns.

Flying Hours Affect Pilot Salary
Hourly pay does not automatically translate into a fixed annual salary. The number of credited hours a pilot receives determines how much base flying pay they collect throughout the year.
Delta guarantees pilots at least 65 credited hours per month, equivalent to 780 hours annually. At the first-year first officer rate of $125.52, this would produce approximately $97,906 in annual base flying pay if the pilot received only the contractual minimum.
For comparison, the US Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reports that airline pilots fly an average of approximately 75 hours per month, or 900 hours annually. Their working duties extend beyond time spent operating aircraft, as pilots also handle flight planning, weather assessments, and other pre-flight responsibilities.
Seniority also influences earning opportunities. Experienced pilots generally have greater access to preferred routes and schedules, while those moving into captain positions receive higher hourly compensation.

Additional Compensation for Pilots
Base flying pay represents only part of a Delta A350 pilot’s overall compensation. Profit sharing and retirement contributions can significantly increase the value of the employment package.
On February 13, 2026, Delta distributed $1.3 billion in profit-sharing payments to employees for its 2025 financial performance. The payout represented 8.9% of eligible annual earnings, although the percentage changes according to the airline’s financial results.
Using a $483,740 annual base-pay example for a senior widebody captain, an 8.9% profit-sharing payment would amount to approximately $43,000. This is an illustration rather than a guaranteed annual payment.
Retirement contributions provide another substantial benefit. Delta increased its direct 401(k) contribution from 17% to 18% of eligible pay on January 1, 2026. At a hypothetical $483,740 base salary, an 18% contribution would represent approximately $87,073.
These additional benefits mean that a senior A350 captain’s overall compensation package can exceed their base flying salary considerably. Pilots may also receive per diem payments, international flight allowances and travel benefits.

US and Europe Comparison
The BLS reported a median annual wage of $232,140 for airline pilots, copilots and flight engineers in May 2025. The lowest 10% earned less than $106,710, while the highest 10% earned more than $463,830.
Against these benchmarks, an experienced Delta widebody captain earning more than $460,000 in annual base flying pay sits among the highest-paid professionals in the US aviation industry. However, these national figures cover pilots across different airlines and aircraft rather than A350 crews exclusively.
Salaries also differ considerably across Europe. Data from ERI cited by Euronews placed average airline pilot earnings across 17 European countries between €32,299 in Romania and €113,672 in Switzerland. Germany recorded an average of approximately €106,000, although these figures are not specific to A350 pilots.

2027 Pay Outlook for Pilots
Delta’s current pilot agreement became amendable on December 31, 2026, creating an opportunity for negotiations over future salary increases. Its last scheduled pay increase under the existing agreement was 4%, which took effect on January 1, 2026.
Fleet expansion could also increase demand for experienced widebody pilots. Delta ordered 15 additional A350-900 aircraft in January 2026 and has 20 A350-1000s on order, with deliveries expected to begin in 2027.
Ultimately, an Airbus A350 pilot’s earnings depend more on the airline’s contract, seniority and credited flying hours than on the aircraft itself. At Delta, the published 2026 pay structure shows how experienced captains can earn more than $460,000 in annual base flying pay, before additional benefits and profit sharing.
