The Boeing 747-8 remains one of the most capable widebody aircraft in commercial aviation, with major cargo airlines relying on experienced flight crews to operate the aircraft across international networks. However, flying the world’s largest production commercial aircraft does not automatically guarantee a higher salary, as pilot compensation depends largely on the airline, seniority, position, and employment contract.
In 2026, Boeing 747-8 pilots can earn between six figures and more than $400,000 annually, depending on their experience and employer. UPS Airlines and Atlas Air (5Y) offer useful examples of the earning potential in the cargo sector, although their compensation structures differ considerably between captains, first officers, and newly recruited pilots.

Boeing 747-8 Pilot Salaries
Boeing 747-8 pilot salaries vary significantly across airlines. Experienced captains at major cargo operators can earn more than $400,000 annually, while first officers generally receive lower compensation that can still reach six figures as they gain experience.
UPS Airlines offers one of the clearest benchmarks for understanding pilot earnings. Its published pay rates reached $401 per hour for senior captains and $284 per hour for senior first officers in September 2025.
These rates provide an indication of the compensation available to experienced pilots entering 2026.
Using approximately 1,000 credited hours annually as a simplified calculation, these rates translate into $401,000 for captains and $284,000 for first officers.
However, these are illustrative estimates rather than guaranteed annual salaries, because actual earnings depend on contractual credit, schedules, and additional payments.

Atlas Air Pilot Pay Rates
Atlas Air uses a separate pay structure negotiated with Teamsters Local 2750. Unlike UPS, its published Boeing 747 pay scale increases according to a pilot’s years of service, creating a substantial difference between newly hired and experienced crew members.
The published 747 captain pay scale starts at approximately $247 per hour in the first year and rises to $332 per hour by the twelfth year.
First officers have a lower scale, increasing from approximately $103 per hour in their first year to $225 per hour by the twelfth year.
These hourly rates should not be confused with guaranteed annual salaries. Atlas Air lists a 64-hour monthly minimum guarantee, which provides a useful baseline when estimating compensation.
At the top captain rate, 64 guaranteed hours per month would represent approximately $255,000 in annual base credit before additional flying or other payments.
The airline also provides a company retirement contribution of 16% from January 2026, according to its published pilot benefit information. This adds considerable value to the overall compensation package beyond basic hourly pay.

What Affects Pilot Earnings?
Seniority and position remain the two most important factors influencing Boeing 747-8 pilot compensation.
Captains generally earn more because they carry command responsibility, oversee flight operations, and make important operational decisions. First officers share flight duties but typically occupy lower positions on the airline’s pay scale.
The number of credited hours also matters. A pilot’s annual earnings can differ from a simple hourly-rate calculation because airlines use contractual minimum guarantees, additional duty payments, per diem allowances, and other compensation provisions.
UPS Airlines, for example, applies a common pilot pay scale across several aircraft types, including the Boeing 747-8F, Boeing 767, and other freighters. Consequently, flying the 747-8 does not automatically place a pilot in a higher pay category.
Contract negotiations can also change future earnings. UPS disclosed in its 2026 financial filings that its agreement with the Independent Pilots Association became amendable on September 1, 2025, and negotiations remained ongoing.
Therefore, the published September 2025 rates provide the relevant benchmark rather than a newly negotiated 2026 pay scale.
Overall, experienced Boeing 747-8 captains at major cargo airlines can earn substantial six-figure incomes, with the highest UPS pay rates approaching $400,000 annually when expressed against 1,000 credited hours, Simple Flying reported.
However, actual compensation depends on seniority, credited flying, contractual guarantees, and benefits. For prospective pilots, the airline’s complete employment package matters more than the aircraft designation alone.
