DOHA- Qatar Airways (QR) plans to introduce its first Airbus A321LR aircraft with STELIA Aerospace OPERA business class suites, lie-flat beds and individual privacy doors. The new cabin will bring a premium long-haul-style experience to the airline’s next-generation narrowbody fleet.
The airline expects to receive its first A321LR in December 2026, with a target to operate its first trip on January 1, 2027, from Doha Hamad International Airport (DOH). The aircraft will feature 16 business class suites in a 1-1 configuration, with further deliveries planned for the remaining aircraft.

Qatar Airways Prepares New Airbus A321LR Fleet
Qatar Airways has 50 new Airbus A321-family aircraft on order, comprising 10 A321LRs and 40 A321neos. The A321LR, or Long Range, variant offers additional range and is designed to operate routes that require greater endurance than conventional short-haul services.
The first aircraft is expected to arrive in December 2026. Qatar Airways Group CEO Hamad Ali Al-Khater has indicated that the airline hopes to operate its first trip on January 1, 2027, to mark the beginning of its 30th anniversary year. The date represents the airline’s stated target rather than a confirmed public flight schedule.
The A321LR will introduce an upgraded narrowbody cabin with dedicated business class suites. Its planned configuration will give the aircraft a distinct role within the Qatar Airways fleet, particularly on routes where the airline wants to offer lie-flat seating without deploying a larger widebody aircraft.

Airbus A321LR Offers 4,000 Nautical Miles of Range
The Airbus A321LR has a stated maximum range of approximately 4,000 nautical miles. From Doha, this range potentially places destinations across Europe, Africa and Asia within reach, depending on operational conditions.
The aircraft’s actual range will depend on payload, wind conditions, fuel reserves, routing and other operating requirements. Its maximum published range does not guarantee that every destination within that radius can be served on a particular day or with a full passenger and baggage load.
The additional range could allow Qatar Airways to consider thinner routes where demand may not support a larger widebody aircraft. The airline has also indicated that the A321LR will help it bring the onboard experience of its narrowbody services closer to that offered on its widebody aircraft.
Al-Khater has discussed the possibility of operating the type on journeys lasting up to eight hours, including services to key European destinations. Munich was among the cities mentioned as a potential part of an operation combining different Qatar Airways business class products. However, the airline has not published a complete confirmed A321LR route schedule, Executive Traveller reported.

Qatar Airways’ Delayed Airbus A321neo-Family Order
Qatar Airways’ Airbus A321neo-family order dates back to 2011, when the airline first announced its commitment to the aircraft. It reconfirmed and increased the order in 2017.
The delivery programme was subsequently disrupted by a dispute between Qatar Airways and Airbus over the surface degradation affecting certain A350 aircraft. The disagreement escalated into legal proceedings, with the airline refusing to accept some Airbus aircraft amid the dispute.
Airbus terminated the A321neo contract, and Qatar Airways lost its original delivery positions. The companies eventually reached a settlement, but the disruption delayed the narrowbody aircraft programme significantly.
The upcoming A321LR deliveries mark a new stage in the order’s progression. The airline will receive its 10 long-range aircraft before the remaining A321neo deliveries, according to the reported plan.
Qatar Airways previously operated six leased Airbus A321neos in an all-economy configuration as a temporary measure. Those aircraft have since moved to Sun PhuQuoc Airways. The incoming A321LRs will bring a different cabin proposition, centred on a premium business class product.

Qatar Airways Selects STELIA Aerospace OPERA Suites
Qatar Airways has selected the STELIA Aerospace OPERA platform for its new Airbus A321LR business class cabin.
The product was confirmed by Al-Khater, as reported by Executive Traveller. The planned installation will feature 16 lie-flat suites arranged in a 1-1 layout, with each suite offering direct aisle access and a privacy door. Qatar Airways will also apply its own finishes to the seats.
Unlike a conventional business class layout with paired seats, the 1-1 arrangement gives each passenger a separate suite. The reverse-herringbone orientation places passengers at an angle toward the aircraft’s windows, helping create a more private space.
The lie-flat design will allow passengers to convert their seats into beds. The privacy doors are intended to provide additional separation from the aisle, creating a suite-like environment on a single-aisle aircraft.
However, the airline will not market the product as Qsuite LR. According to Al-Khater’s comments, the Qsuite name will remain associated with the flagship business class product used on the airline’s larger aircraft. The A321LR will offer a related premium experience without adopting that specific branding.

Air France, ITA Airways and Etihad Also Use OPERA
STELIA Aerospace’s OPERA platform is already used by other airlines, although seat configurations differ by aircraft type and operator.
Air France introduced the widebody version of OPERA on its Airbus A350 aircraft. That version is adapted to the requirements of a larger aircraft cabin.
ITA Airways became the launch customer for the narrowbody version on its Airbus A321neo aircraft. Etihad Airways has also selected the platform for its Airbus A321LR fleet.
Qatar Airways plans to differentiate its installation by fitting doors to its business class suites. ITA Airways does not offer doors on its standard narrowbody OPERA business class seats, while Etihad offers a door on the First Class seat in the first row rather than across its standard business class cabin.
Qatar Airways’ plan to install doors throughout the 16-seat business class cabin will therefore give its A321LR product a different level of privacy.

Qatar Airways A321LR Business Class Compared With Other Airlines
Airlines have adopted different business class seat designs for their long-range narrowbody aircraft.
JetBlue uses its Mint product on Airbus A321LR aircraft, while American Airlines is introducing premium seating on its Airbus A321XLR fleet. These cabins reflect different approaches to balancing passenger privacy, seat layout and available space on single-aisle aircraft.
Qatar Airways’ OPERA installation will combine a reverse-herringbone layout, direct aisle access, lie-flat beds and privacy doors.
The new cabin is designed to reduce the difference between the experience passengers receive on narrowbody and widebody services. Qatar Airways has described consistency across its business class products as an important objective, allowing passengers to encounter a premium experience even when their connecting flight uses a smaller aircraft.

Qatar Airways A321LR Fleet and Route Plans
The 10 Airbus A321LRs will form part of Qatar Airways’ broader fleet renewal programme alongside 40 A321neos. The two variants will provide different operational capabilities, with the LR offering greater range for longer routes.
The new aircraft could help Qatar Airways serve selected markets with lower demand than would normally justify a larger widebody aircraft. It could also allow the airline to adjust capacity while maintaining a premium business class product.
The airline has not yet confirmed all routes, frequencies or aircraft deployment plans for the incoming A321LR fleet. Passengers should therefore not assume that a particular route will receive the new cabin until Qatar Airways publishes its schedules and aircraft assignments.
The delivery programme will also be important for the airline’s wider objective of providing a more consistent passenger experience across its network. The A321LR’s 16-seat business class cabin will offer a different configuration from the airline’s larger Qsuite-equipped aircraft, even as Qatar Airways seeks to narrow the difference in onboard comfort.

Bottom Line
Qatar Airways expects to receive its first Airbus A321LR in December 2026 and is targeting January 1, 2027, for its first trip. The airline has selected STELIA Aerospace OPERA for its 16-seat business class cabin, with lie-flat beds, a 1-1 layout and privacy doors.
The 10 A321LRs will join an order for 40 Airbus A321neos, giving Qatar Airways additional flexibility for routes that require a long-range narrowbody aircraft. The airline’s decision to install doors across its business class suites will distinguish its OPERA cabin from comparable installations at ITA Airways and Etihad Airways.
The aircraft’s confirmed routes and public service schedule remain key details to watch as the delivery programme approaches.
