TOKYO- Japan Airlines (JL) and Nippon Express have launched a cargo partnership covering intra-Asia and North America-Asia routes to meet strong demand for AI, semiconductor and technology-related freight.
The weekly circuit links Los Angeles (LAX), Tokyo Narita (NRT), Taipei Taoyuan (TPE) and Singapore (SIN), with Narita appearing twice in the rotation before the aircraft returns to Los Angeles.

New Freighter Service Connects North America and Asia
Japan Airlines and Nippon Express have introduced a new transport partnership designed to strengthen cargo connectivity across intra-Asia and North America-Asia trade lanes.
The service operates on a round-trip circuit starting in Los Angeles and continuing through Tokyo Narita, Taipei Taoyuan, Singapore and Narita before returning to Los Angeles. The route structure allows cargo to move between individual points on the circuit rather than only between the two endpoints.
The first flight departed Los Angeles on 3 October 2026. The service will operate once a week for the remainder of the year, adding scheduled large-freighter capacity to the network.
The service uses a Boeing 747 freighter with a maximum payload of approximately 100 tons. Japan Airlines secured the aircraft through cooperation with its partners.
The 747F gives the partnership capacity to handle oversized and heavy cargo that can be difficult to move on smaller freighter aircraft. The companies specifically identified server racks and data centre-related equipment as target cargo.
The service is also designed to carry high-value-added freight. Demand for this type of cargo is increasing alongside the spread of generative AI and higher investment in digital infrastructure.

Strong Demand Across Tokyo, Taipei and Singapore
Japan Airlines and Nippon Express said demand for AI- and semiconductor-related cargo is currently very strong, particularly between Tokyo, Taipei and Singapore.
At the same time, relatively few airlines operate large freighters within Asia. This leaves shippers with limited options when they need greater cargo capacity for heavy, oversized or high-value technology equipment.
The new service adds large-freighter capability to these intra-Asia markets while also linking them directly with the US West Coast.
Cargo can be loaded and unloaded at each port of call on the circuit. This gives shippers greater flexibility when planning movements across different Asian and North American markets.
The multi-stop structure can support changing transport requirements by allowing cargo to enter or leave the network at different stages of the rotation. This flexibility is particularly relevant for complex technology supply chains that require movement between several manufacturing, distribution and infrastructure markets.
The service therefore combines large aircraft capacity with a routing structure intended to accommodate different cargo flows across the network.

JAL Expands Cargo Reach on US West Coast
Yuichiro Kito, Executive Officer and Senior Vice President, Cargo and Mail at Japan Airlines, said the partnership builds on the long-standing relationship between JAL and the NX Group.
Kito said the arrangement complements JAL’s passenger flights and its own freighter network while bringing large-freighter service to the US West Coast for the first time.
He also said the partnership would help JAL expand its air cargo network in rapidly growing markets and make JAL Cargo’s high-quality cargo handling services available to more customers.
The addition strengthens JAL’s ability to serve cargo flows involving major Asian technology markets while extending its large-freighter reach into North America.

NX Group Targets Flexible Air Cargo Capacity
Satoshi Otsuji, Senior Managing Executive Officer and President of Global Business Headquarters at NIPPON EXPRESS HOLDINGS, said the partnership will strengthen the NX Group’s ability to provide more stable and flexible transport solutions.
Otsuji linked the initiative to increasingly sophisticated and diverse air transport requirements. He said NX Group will build on its long-standing cooperation with JAL to further expand its international air cargo network using large freighter aircraft.
The expansion is intended to support customer supply-chain stability while helping businesses manage growing and changing transportation requirements.

Further Network Expansion Planned
Both companies plan to pursue additional network expansion after the launch of the new service. The partnership gives JAL and NX Group a platform to develop additional large-freighter capacity in markets where cargo demand continues to grow.
The initial weekly operation focuses on a clear combination of North American and intra-Asian demand. It also creates additional capacity for AI, semiconductor, data centre and other high-value technology cargo.
