HONG KONG— An Etihad Airways (EY) flight from Tokyo Narita International Airport (NRT) to Abu Dhabi Zayed International Airport (AUH) diverted to Hong Kong International Airport (HKG) after an 81-year-old passenger developed suspected acute stroke symptoms during the journey.
Flight EY801, operated by an Airbus A380-800, was carrying about 500 passengers when the medical emergency occurred on September 24.
The aircraft had departed Narita at around 6:24 p.m. and was flying over mainland China near Wuhan when the passenger became unwell.
Etihad Passenger Falls Ill Mid-flight
Cabin crew alerted the flight deck after noticing the passenger’s condition, prompting the pilots to assess the situation and arrange a diversion.
With Hong Kong offering access to medical facilities, the crew changed course toward the city while the passenger required urgent attention.
The diversion also required airport authorities to prepare for the aircraft’s arrival. As the A380 was operating a long-haul flight, it was expected to have considerable fuel remaining, raising concerns about its landing weight.
Hong Kong International Airport was therefore asked to activate a partial standby operation. Fire engines and ambulances were positioned in preparation for the aircraft’s arrival, although the flight ultimately landed safely without any reported operational incident.
A380 Lands Safely In Hong Kong
Airport authorities received notification of the diversion at approximately 9:50 p.m. The aircraft reached Hong Kong at around 10 p.m. and landed on the centre runway before taxiing to its assigned parking stand.
Emergency crews were already waiting when the aircraft reached the stand. They provided first aid to the passenger before transferring him to local medical personnel for further treatment.
The passenger’s medical condition was not immediately disclosed. Etihad confirmed that the passenger had been handed over to local medical staff following the diversion.
Flight Continues to Abu Dhabi
After the medical response was completed, the A380 remained on the ground before continuing its original journey. The aircraft departed Hong Kong at approximately 12:21 a.m. on Friday.
Flight tracking records show that EY801 subsequently continued toward Abu Dhabi after the unscheduled Hong Kong stop.
The diversion extended the journey considerably, with the flight eventually reaching Abu Dhabi about three hours and 58 minutes behind its scheduled arrival time, The Standard reported.
The incident highlights the operational decisions involved when a serious medical emergency develops during a long-haul flight.
In this case, the crew diverted the aircraft to provide the passenger with access to emergency medical care while airport teams prepared for the A380’s arrival.
