EAST HARTFORD– Pratt & Whitney, an RTX business, has marked the delivery of the first Airbus A321XLR powered by its new GTF Advantage engines to United Airlines (UA).
The aircraft represents the first commercial delivery of the upgraded geared turbofan engine, which is designed to provide greater durability and additional performance for the Airbus A320neo family.
United Airlines, based in Chicago, will become the first airline to operate an aircraft equipped with the production-standard GTF Advantage. The A321XLR is designed for extra-long-range missions, while Hartford, Connecticut (BDL), is the nearest major commercial aviation reference point to Pratt & Whitney’s East Hartford headquarters.

United Airlines GTF Advantage Delivery Marks New Milestone
The new engine marks an important development in Pratt & Whitney’s GTF program as the company moves from the current PW1100G-JM standard toward the Advantage configuration.
Pratt & Whitney says the upgraded engine combines a redesigned hot section with aerodynamic improvements intended to increase durability and performance.
One of the main changes is a substantial increase in time on wing. The GTF Advantage is expected to deliver up to twice the time on wing of today’s GTF engine, potentially allowing operators to keep engines installed for longer periods before planned maintenance.
The engine also provides between 4% and 8% more takeoff thrust than the current GTF, depending on operating conditions.
Pratt & Whitney says the additional thrust can support greater range capability, making the configuration particularly suitable for the long-range A321XLR.

A321XLR Performance Gains For Long-Haul
The GTF Advantage’s higher thrust is especially relevant to the A321XLR, the longest-range member of Airbus’ A320neo family.
The aircraft combines a narrowbody configuration with the ability to operate longer routes, placing greater demands on propulsion performance and durability.
Pratt & Whitney developed the upgraded engine using operational data from the existing GTF fleet, including more than 50 million flight hours, alongside engine testing and engineering analysis.
Improvements include changes to airflow, turbine cooling and coatings that are intended to reduce heat-related wear inside the engine.
The manufacturer says the GTF Advantage remains fully intermixable and interchangeable with the current GTF model. This allows airlines with mixed GTF fleets to introduce the newer engine standard without requiring a completely separate operating system.

Pratt & Whitney GTF Production Plans Ahead
Pratt & Whitney plans to transition its entire PW1100G-JM production line to the GTF Advantage specification by 2028. The move will make the upgraded configuration the production standard for new PW1100G-JM engines.
Existing GTF operators will also have an upgrade path through the GTF Hot Section Plus package. Pratt & Whitney expects the upgrade to provide up to 90% to 95% of the GTF Advantage’s durability benefits when incorporated during maintenance visits beginning in early 2027, RTX reported.
The delivery to United therefore introduces the GTF Advantage into airline service while Pratt & Whitney continues expanding the technology across its production and maintenance network.
For United, the engine will be paired with the A321XLR as the airline adds long-range narrowbody capability to its fleet.
