ATLANTA- Delta Air Lines (DL) will resume its pre-COVID route between Raleigh-Durham International Airport (RDU) and Fort Myers (RSW) from November 21, in a move that appears to come at the expense of 3 intercity routes from New York JFK Airport (JFK).
The SkyTeam carrier will simultaneously axe nonstop service from JFK to Memphis International Airport (MEM), St. Louis (STL) and Houston George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH), with LaGuardia Airport (LGA) picking up the slack for regional travel.

Raleigh Regains Its Nonstop Link To Southwest Florida
Delta has announced the Raleigh to Fort Myers return alongside the 3 route cuts at New York JFK. The airline plans to serve the Florida route with a once daily flight operated by the Bombardier CRJ900 from November 21.
Delta previously served the pairing, but that was over 6 years ago, before the COVID-19 pandemic. Schedule records show the carrier’s last RDU to Fort Myers departure was set for January 5, 2020.
Fort Myers, also known as Southwest Florida International Airport, is the second busiest single-runway airport in the country.
The airport handled more than 11.1 million passengers in 2025 and ranks among the top 50 US airports for traffic. It also set an all-time monthly record in March 2026, when 1,521,149 passengers passed through the terminal, a 3.9% rise on March 2025.
Delta already holds a strong position at the airport. Lee County Port Authority figures show Delta led all carriers in March 2026 with 289,910 passengers, ahead of Southwest, United, American and JetBlue.
Breeze Airways is the only other carrier currently operating the Raleigh route nonstop. The two airlines will go head to head on a popular pairing for travelers escaping winter temperatures and heading to the Sunshine State across the colder months. Fort Myers is one of Breeze’s operating bases, alongside Raleigh-Durham itself.
For Delta, this marks the airline’s tenth route to Fort Myers. It joins Austin Bergstrom International Airport (AUS), which is also set to debut on the Fort Myers map from November 21 as the airline aggressively expands its presence at Austin.
Schedules for the Fort Myers route are yet to be posted. Nonstop flights will take approximately two hours and five minutes gate-to-gate when traveling southbound, and around two hours for the return.
The flight will cover a distance of 668 miles (1,076 km), saving nearly 11 hours compared with the same journey by road.

Several New Services to Fort Myers
The new Delta route arrives at a time when Fort Myers will welcome several additions before the year closes.
Avelo Airlines plans to connect Fort Myers to Charlotte/Concord from November 19 and Dallas/McKinney from November 11. Breeze Airways will add service to Atlantic City from October 22, Dayton from October 23, Madison from October 21, and Trenton from January 8.
Delta plans to connect Austin to Southwest Florida from November 21, and Southwest Airlines (WN) adds a nonstop link from Omaha from next March.
JetBlue Airways is the only airline cutting back services at the airport, as it will shelve its seasonal service to Providence from September 9.

Delta Makes More Changes At New York JFK
Delta will axe its nonstop services from JFK to Houston, Memphis and St. Louis. It is presumed that the airline will reutilize these slots at the busy New York airport for key international and domestic routes, with LaGuardia picking up regional travel, as Delta already serves these destinations from its other New York airport.
The 3 services are recent additions rather than legacy routes. Delta launched JFK to Houston, Memphis and St. Louis on September 8, 2025 as part of a wider New York expansion announced that May.
All 3 were then paused from June 7, 2026, with a scheduled return on September 8, 2026, as part of a set of suspensions tied to elevated fuel costs. The same round of cuts also paused Raleigh-Durham to Las Vegas from June 2.
The change follows months of on-again, off-again travel between JFK and St. Louis. Delta will still serve all 3 cities from LaGuardia.
According to Simple Flying, the cut leaves JetBlue as the only carrier flying to Houston from JFK, while the other two cities will only be served by neighboring airports.
| Destination | Served From Other New York Airports |
|---|---|
| Houston (IAH) | LaGuardia: Delta, United. Newark: United. New York-JFK: JetBlue |
| Memphis (MEM) | LaGuardia: American, Delta. Newark: United |
| St. Louis (STL) | LaGuardia: American, Delta, Southwest. Newark: United |

Why LaGuardia Can Absorb 3 Markets
A long-standing regulation makes the shift to LaGuardia possible. The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey introduced a 1,500-mile perimeter rule at LaGuardia in 1984 to manage congestion and push longer flights toward JFK and Newark, with a standing exception for Denver. Saturday services are also exempt from the distance cap.
Houston, Memphis and St. Louis all sit inside that 1,500-mile limit, so Delta faces no regulatory barrier to concentrating the three markets at LaGuardia. Delta is the largest carrier at the airport.

Raleigh-Durham Has Become A Core Delta Market
The Fort Myers addition fits a wider buildup in North Carolina. RDU is a Delta focus city and an operating base for both Breeze Airways and Endeavor Air, with more than 19 carriers serving over 85 destinations. The airport set a passenger record in 2025 with 15.6 million travelers.
Annual traffic at RDU has grown by close to two-thirds over the past decade, from 10 million to nearly 16 million passengers, and Delta emerged as the airport’s largest airline in 2026. Growth on the Atlanta to Raleigh route, which rises to 12 daily round trips in the summer schedule, has driven much of that gain.
Delta’s wholly owned regional subsidiary Endeavor Air opened a crew base at RDU in the second quarter of 2025, its seventh in the country, adding to a maintenance base already in place. The base allows Endeavor to fly point-to-point routes from Raleigh that bypass Delta’s hubs, which is exactly the pattern the Fort Myers service follows.
Competition at the airport is also intensifying. Breeze has raised its RDU flying by 82% in the second quarter of 2026 against a year earlier, making Raleigh its busiest airport.

Austin Drives Delta’s Fastest Focus City Growth
The Austin to Fort Myers launch on the same date reflects a separate expansion push. Cirium data shows Delta scheduled 14% more seats from Austin in 2026 than in 2025, making it the carrier’s fastest-growing focus city ahead of Raleigh-Durham, with nine new routes added. Scheduled Delta departures from Austin are set to reach 21,405 this year, up from 18,314 in 2025.
Delta is the leading global carrier at Austin-Bergstrom, with 63 peak-day departures in summer 2026 and a plan to serve 30 destinations from the airport by December 2026.

Delta’s Wider Network Position
Delta Air Lines remains one of the largest airlines in the US, with close to 1,000 mainline aircraft and operations to more than 325 destinations around the globe.
The airline has an extensive network of regional flights across the United States, and its latest move to cut 3 routes from JFK will be condensed to LaGuardia. Sun seekers in North Carolina will now have an additional option for travel to Southwest Florida.
