LONDON— A British Airways (BA) Airbus A320 safely landed at London Heathrow Airport (LHR) on Wednesday after the flight crew declared an emergency following the discovery of a hydraulic system fault during the aircraft’s final approach.
The aircraft had been operating Flight BA547 from Rome Fiumicino Airport (FCO) when the issue prompted pilots to discontinue the initial landing attempt.
The Airbus A320 had completed the majority of its journey without incident after departing Rome at approximately 11:40 local time.
However, as the aircraft approached Heathrow for landing, the crew identified a problem affecting the hydraulic system linked to the landing gear, requiring emergency procedures before the flight could safely touch down.

The technical issue emerged during the aircraft’s final approach to Heathrow’s northern runway. The hydraulic malfunction prevented the landing gear from deploying normally, leaving the crew with insufficient assurance to continue the landing.
At an altitude of roughly 450 feet above ground level, the pilots executed a go-around, a standard aviation safety maneuver that involves abandoning the landing and climbing away from the runway.
The aircraft then climbed to approximately 3,700 feet before entering a holding pattern over the area while the crew assessed the malfunction.
During this period, pilots worked through the aircraft’s emergency checklists to isolate the hydraulic problem and determine whether a safe landing could be completed.
They also transmitted the internationally recognized Squawk 7700 emergency code, allowing air traffic control to provide immediate priority handling.
Safe Landing At Heathrow
After approximately 20 minutes in the holding pattern, the crew completed the required procedures and prepared for another approach to Heathrow.
The aircraft successfully landed at around 1:45 p.m. local time without further complications, The Mirror reported.
Airport fire and rescue teams were positioned alongside the runway as a precaution because the emergency involved the aircraft’s landing gear.
Emergency vehicles routinely attend such incidents to respond immediately if additional assistance becomes necessary after touchdown.
Despite the emergency declaration, the aircraft remained under control throughout the event, and the landing concluded safely with no injuries reported among passengers or crew.
Airport Operations Continue Smoothly
The emergency temporarily affected operations at Heathrow, one of the world’s busiest international airports.
Air traffic controllers diverted arriving aircraft from the northern runway to the southern runway while BA547 completed its emergency landing and underwent an initial safety assessment.
The runway restrictions remained in place for only a short period, allowing airport operations to resume quickly after the aircraft was cleared.
According to available information, the temporary disruption resulted in only limited delays for other flights.
