WASHINGTON— The United States’ interim presidential aircraft, a Boeing 747-8 known as the “bridge” Air Force One, has completed its first international mission. The aircraft carried President Donald Trump from Joint Base Andrews (ADW) to Türkiye for the 2026 NATO Summit.
The $400 million jet arrived at Ankara Esenboğa International Airport (ESB) for the summit, which centers on defense spending, Russia’s war in Ukraine, and alliance priorities. The flight marks the aircraft’s first overseas presidential deployment while the delayed VC-25B program continues.

Interim 747 Jet Begins Overseas Presidential Duties
The Boeing 747-8 earned the “bridge” label because it fills a capability gap until Boeing delivers the next-generation VC-25B fleet.
Valued at roughly $400 million, the aircraft entered presidential service after modifications for executive transport, though it is not the permanent replacement planned for the aging VC-25A fleet.
Aviation observers shared photos and videos of the aircraft arriving in Türkiye, where it now supports Trump’s participation in the summit.
The trip represents the first time the interim jet has flown an international presidential mission, showing its readiness for long-haul diplomatic travel. The aircraft had already flown domestically as part of the America 250 celebrations before this overseas debut.

Inside The $400 Million Bridge Aircraft
The jet is a heavily modified Boeing 747-8 originally configured as a VVIP airliner and gifted to the United States by Qatar.
The US Air Force prioritized rapid delivery over a full custom rebuild, allowing the aircraft to enter service quickly ahead of its first diplomatic mission.
The bridge aircraft lacks some of the long-term modifications planned for the VC-25B program, but it gives the White House greater flexibility while Boeing continues work on the permanent replacement fleet.
The Air Force has acquired 747-8 airframes to help accelerate that program, with the purpose-built VC-25B aircraft not expected to enter service until around 2028.

NATO Summit Focuses On Defense And Ukraine
Trump’s visit comes as NATO leaders gather in Ankara to address several pressing security issues.
According to CNBC, discussions are expected to cover continued support for Ukraine, relations with Russia, alliance defense spending commitments, and broader European security challenges.
The summit also allows bilateral meetings with allied leaders amid ongoing geopolitical tension. Defense spending remains a central theme, with members facing continued pressure to increase military investment.
Leaders are also expected to examine the alliance’s long-term strategy as the conflict in Ukraine continues and members work to strengthen collective deterrence.

A Temporary Platform With A Prominent Role
Although the interim Boeing 747-8 is expected to serve only until the VC-25B fleet arrives, its first overseas deployment highlights its growing role in presidential transportation.
The aircraft gives the United States a modern long-range platform for international travel while reducing reliance on the aging VC-25A jets that have served as Air Force One since the early 1990s.
International missions place unique demands on Air Force One, requiring close coordination with the US Air Force, host nations, and security agencies across multiple time zones. Completing this first overseas assignment marks an operational milestone and reinforces confidence in the aircraft’s ability to handle future diplomatic travel.
With more international trips expected, the bridge jet will likely remain a visible part of US presidential diplomacy until the next-generation Air Force One fleet is ready.
