GURUGRAM- An Air India (AI) Boeing 777 bound for Delhi (DEL) discontinued its takeoff at Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (BOM) on Tuesday evening after air traffic control issued an instruction to abort the run.
The airline confirmed that the crew operating flight AI816 halted the departure and returned the aircraft to the bay. Airport sources linked the decision to an Air India Express (IX) Boeing 737 that had not cleared the runway after landing.

Air India 777 Halts Departure on Mumbai Runway
The Delhi-bound flight AI816 was in its takeoff roll at Mumbai airport when air traffic control directed the pilots to stop.
The crew followed the instruction, discontinued the run, and brought the widebody back to the parking bay. Air India acknowledged the event but did not state a reason for the aborted takeoff.
Airport sources offered further context on the sequence. According to them, the controllers asked the AI816 pilots to abort because an Air India Express Boeing 737 had not vacated the runway after its arrival.
The runway conflict prompted the immediate call to halt the departure and avoid any risk on the active strip.

Air India’s Official Statement
Air India described the crew’s action as a precautionary response to the air traffic control instruction.
In its statement, the airline said the crew operating flight AI816 from Mumbai to Delhi discontinued the takeoff run after receiving an instruction from air traffic control and returned to the bay.
The airline added: “The aircraft will undergo necessary checks as per standard operating procedures. Meanwhile, alternative arrangements are being made to fly the passengers to their destination at the earliest. At Air India, the safety and wellbeing of our passengers remain top priority.”

Aircraft Checks and Passenger Arrangements
Following the aborted takeoff, the Boeing 777 was set to undergo the checks required under standard operating procedures before it could return to service. Air India stated that alternative arrangements were being organized to carry the affected passengers to Delhi at the earliest.
The airline framed the response around passenger safety, reinforcing that the decision to stop the takeoff aligned with established operating protocols for such situations.
