CHRISTCHURCH– Passengers traveling on an Air New Zealand (NZ) flight from Christchurch Airport (CHC) to Auckland Airport (AKL) have been told they will not receive their checked baggage until at least the following day after their aircraft became stuck beside a taxiway before departure.
The incident occurred on June 21 when the domestic flight was preparing to leave Christchurch.
While taxiing, the aircraft’s main landing gear moved onto a grassy area adjacent to the taxiway, forcing the airline to halt operations and safely disembark all passengers from the aircraft.

Air New Zealand’s Aircraft Stuck Overnight
Air New Zealand confirmed that the aircraft remains at the location where the incident occurred and cannot be moved immediately because specialized recovery equipment is required.
According to the airline, engineers and operational teams determined that a specialist towing system must be transported to Christchurch before the aircraft can be safely returned to the gate. As a result, the aircraft is expected to remain in place overnight.
Nathan McGraw, Air New Zealand’s Chief Safety and Risk Officer, said passengers exited the aircraft safely, and no injuries were reported. The airline emphasized that safety remains its primary concern while recovery efforts continue.
The unusual situation has also created a secondary challenge for affected travelers, as baggage compartments remain inaccessible while the aircraft is stranded away from the terminal.

Baggage Recovery Delay
Air New Zealand informed passengers that checked luggage cannot be unloaded from the aircraft until recovery teams move the jet back to a suitable gate position.
The airline acknowledged that the delay would be frustrating for travelers, particularly those arriving in Auckland for business, family commitments, or onward travel arrangements.
However, officials stated that unloading baggage before the aircraft is safely repositioned is not currently possible.
Air New Zealand said staff members are working to reunite customers with their belongings as quickly as operational conditions allow.
The carrier expects baggage retrieval efforts to begin once recovery operations have been completed and the aircraft undergoes an initial engineering inspection.
The airline is also coordinating alternative travel arrangements for passengers whose journey to Auckland was disrupted by the incident.

Airport Operations Unaffected
Despite the stranded aircraft, Christchurch Airport confirmed that normal airport operations continued throughout the day without significant disruption.
Airport officials stated that other arrivals and departures were able to operate as scheduled, and the affected aircraft did not block active runways or create wider traffic management issues.
Once the aircraft returns to the gate, Air New Zealand plans to conduct a detailed engineering assessment to determine whether any damage occurred when the landing gear entered the soft ground area.
The incident highlights the operational challenges airlines can face during ground movements, even before a flight departs.
While passengers reached safety without injury, many now face an unexpected overnight wait before being reunited with their luggage and continuing their travel plans.
