TOKYO— Etihad Airways (EY) has officially launched Airbus A380 service between Abu Dhabi International Airport (AUH) and Narita International Airport (NRT), marking a major upgrade on one of the carrier’s most important Asian routes.
The inaugural flight arrived in Japan on June 18, bringing the airline’s flagship double-decker aircraft to the country for the first time.
The deployment significantly increases capacity between Abu Dhabi and Tokyo while expanding premium travel options for passengers.
The move also introduces Etihad’s ultra-exclusive The Residence suite to the Japanese market, giving travelers access to one of the most luxurious commercial aviation experiences available today.

Etihad’s A380 to Tokyo
The daily Airbus A380 service represents a strategic investment in growing demand between the UAE and Japan. The route now benefits from the airline’s largest passenger aircraft, which offers substantially more seats across all cabin classes compared to smaller widebody jets.
Arik De, Chief Revenue and Commercial Officer at Etihad Airways, said Tokyo remains one of the airline’s most valued destinations. He noted that strong demand for premium travel and international connectivity influenced the decision to deploy the flagship aircraft on the route.
The launch also marks the return of Etihad’s eighth Airbus A380 to active service. Over the past several years, the airline has gradually expanded its A380 network as demand for long-haul premium travel continues to strengthen.
Passengers traveling through Abu Dhabi can connect seamlessly to destinations across Etihad’s global network.
The carrier also continues to promote its Abu Dhabi Stopover program, which includes complimentary hotel stays for eligible travelers transiting through the UAE capital.

Emirates will Debut “The Residence” in Japan
A key highlight of the aircraft’s arrival in Japan is the introduction of The Residence, the world’s only three-room suite aboard a commercial airliner.
Designed for up to two guests, the private space includes a separate living room, bedroom, and ensuite bathroom with a shower.
Dedicated cabin crew members provide personalized service throughout the flight, while guests can customize dining experiences with an à la carte menu.
The Residence has become one of the most recognizable premium products in commercial aviation since its introduction. Travelers can enjoy exclusive offerings such as champagne service, caviar, signature high tea experiences, and private in-suite dining.
Etihad’s First-Class cabin also offers nine private suites equipped with lie-flat beds, personal vanity units, and access to an onboard shower facility.
These amenities place the airline among a small group of carriers still offering true international first-class products.

Cabin Features of Etihad’s A380
Beyond its premium cabins, the Airbus A380 delivers enhanced comfort throughout the aircraft.
The upper deck houses 70 Business Class seats along with The Lobby, a dedicated lounge and social space located between the First and Business cabins.
The aircraft also features 415 Economy Class seats designed with fixed-wing headrests, improved ergonomics, and additional comfort features for long-haul travel. High-speed onboard Wi-Fi is available across the aircraft, allowing passengers to remain connected throughout their journey.
Under the current schedule, flight EY800 departs Abu Dhabi at 21:25 and arrives in Tokyo at 12:45 the following day.
The return service, EY801, leaves Tokyo at 18:00 and lands in Abu Dhabi at 00:20 the next day, with Airbus A380 operations scheduled daily.
