SACRAMENTO— A 49-year-old passenger was indicted after security officials stopped him at Sacramento International Airport (SMF) during an attempted American Airlines (AA) departure.
Authorities intercepted him before he could board a flight bound for Charlotte Douglas International Airport (CLT). The incident occurred on May 30 and involved explosive materials and multiple prohibited items detected at a TSA checkpoint.
Transportation Security Administration officers flagged the passenger at a checkpoint after suspicious behavior and screening anomalies.
He later refused interview requests and was detained by federal authorities following an initial assessment of his baggage.

American Airlines Passenger with Explosives
Officers observed the passenger wearing a face covering and blue latex gloves, which raised initial concerns during screening.
Security personnel then conducted a detailed inspection after alarms indicated possible hazardous contents in his carry-on. Investigators treated the case as a high-risk security breach requiring immediate escalation.
The bag reportedly contained a knife, scissors, scissor blades, an aerosol can, and zip ties alongside multiple mobile phones.
One device included a 15-minute timer that appeared primed for activation, according to investigative findings. This prompted immediate isolation of the luggage for forensic evaluation.
Specialists from the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office and FBI bomb technicians later rendered the explosive device safe.
Authorities confirmed that both the powder and fuse material showed energetic properties capable of causing serious damage. The device was safely neutralized before any risk to airport operations escalated further.

Federal Indictment Details
A federal grand jury returned a three-count indictment against the passenger following the investigation.
Charges included attempting to place a destructive device on an aircraft and unlawfully possessing explosive material within an airport.
The indictment reflects continued federal emphasis on preventing explosives from entering commercial aviation environments.
Authorities also charged him with attempting to carry a dangerous weapon and explosive device onto a commercial aircraft, the Los Angeles Times flagged.
Prosecutors emphasized that the evidence supported a potential risk to both passengers and aircraft systems.
Prosecutors stated that the evidence demonstrated intent sufficient for multiple federal aviation security violations.
