International airfare prices remain volatile heading into the peak Summer 2026 travel season, but travel analysts say several destinations across Mexico, the Caribbean, Central America, and Canada are still offering relatively cheap flights despite rising fuel costs and airline capacity shifts.
Travel experts at Dollar Flight Club said travelers can still secure affordable international fares if they focus on short-haul markets with strong airline competition.
The company’s latest airfare analysis, based on departures from more than 65 airports, found that routes to destinations such as Puerto Vallarta, San Juan, and San José remain among the best-value options this summer.

Cheapest Summer Flights
According to the report published in Travel and Leisure, León/Guanajuato (BJX) in Mexico currently offers the lowest average international airfare range, with round-trip tickets priced between $185 and $288. San Juan in Puerto Rico followed closely, with fares averaging between $196 and $300.
Puerto Vallarta ranked among the most affordable beach destinations for Summer 2026, with average airfare ranging from $228 to $355. Other budget-friendly destinations included Guatemala City, San José in Costa Rica, and Punta Cana in the Dominican Republic.
The report also highlighted Mexico City, Nassau, Montego Bay, and Toronto as relatively affordable international gateways for U.S. travelers this season. Analysts said these destinations continue to benefit from strong airline competition and shorter average flight times.

Rising Travel Costs
The broader airline industry continues to face significant pressure from elevated jet fuel prices and ongoing market instability.
Analysts said reduced competition following operational cutbacks among some low-cost carriers has also contributed to higher average airfare levels across several long-haul markets.
Dollar Flight Club founder Jesse Neugarten stated that Summer 2026 represents one of the most unpredictable travel markets in recent years.
However, he emphasized that airfare deals have shifted geographically rather than disappeared entirely.
Industry experts said travelers departing from East Coast airports generally have access to cheaper international fares compared to passengers flying from many western U.S. cities.
Flights to the Caribbean, Mexico, and Central America remain particularly competitive because of strong demand and frequent airline service.
Meanwhile, some long-haul transatlantic and Pacific routes have experienced steeper fare increases due to fuel costs and constrained capacity.

Booking Strategy
Travel analysts also recommended flexible booking strategies to maximize savings during the busy summer season.
Recent travel data from Expedia suggested that travelers may secure lower fares by booking airline tickets on Fridays and selecting Tuesday departures whenever possible.
Experts added that airlines continue adjusting schedules and capacity throughout the summer as demand patterns evolve.
Travelers willing to shift travel dates by even a few days may find substantially cheaper fares on highly competitive routes.
The report concluded that while airfare prices remain elevated compared to pre-pandemic levels, strategic route selection and early booking can still help travelers secure affordable international trips during Summer 2026.
