HONG KONG– Hong Kong International Airport (HKG) officially opened its long-awaited Terminal 2 on May 27, marking a major milestone in the airport’s HK$141.5 billion (US$14.5 billion) expansion project aimed at strengthening its position against regional rivals Singapore Changi Airport (SIN) and Dubai International Airport (DXB).
The new terminal forms part of Hong Kong’s broader strategy to reclaim market share in global passenger and cargo traffic following years of pandemic disruption and rising competition across Asia and the Middle East.
Passengers began arriving before dawn for the terminal’s first departure, operated by Hong Kong Airlines (HX) to Shanghai.
Airport officials said the new facility will initially accommodate several low-cost and regional carriers, including AirAsia (AK), IndiGo (6E), Bangkok Airways (PG), Cebu Pacific (5J), Cambodia Airways (KR), and Hainan Airlines (HU), while freeing additional capacity at Terminal 1 for full-service airlines such as Cathay Pacific (CX).

Hong Kong Airport’s Terminal Expansion
Hong Kong International Airport’s new Terminal 2 is designed to handle up to 30 million passengers annually and significantly expand operational flexibility at one of Asia’s busiest aviation hubs.
The terminal opening also complements the airport’s newly operational third runway, which authorities believe will help raise annual passenger handling capacity to 100 million travelers.
According to aviation analytics firm OAG, Hong Kong ranked as the world’s eighth-busiest international airport in 2025, offering 38.7 million seats.
That figure remained behind Dubai International Airport’s 62.4 million seats and Singapore Changi Airport’s 42.6 million seats, highlighting the intense competition among major global transit hubs.
Airport executives described Terminal 2 as one of the world’s most technologically advanced passenger facilities.
Steven Yiu, Executive Director of Airport Operations at HKIA, said the additional terminal capacity is essential for long-term growth as airlines continue restoring and expanding international networks.

Smart Travel Systems
The airport has heavily integrated automation, artificial intelligence, and biometric processing into the passenger journey. Terminal 2 features 58 self-service check-in kiosks, 68 automated bag-drop counters, and 108 traditional check-in desks.
HKIA also introduced its “Flight Token” biometric system, allowing eligible passengers to move through multiple airport checkpoints using facial recognition technology rather than repeatedly presenting passports or boarding passes.
Airport authorities said the system is intended to reduce congestion and improve processing times during peak periods.
Robotics and AI-powered systems will assist airport staff with passenger handling, baggage processing, and operational monitoring.
Officials believe these technologies will help improve efficiency while limiting staffing pressure as global air travel demand continues to rise.

Regional Competition
The terminal opening comes as Asian aviation hubs attempt to capture additional transit traffic amid ongoing instability affecting some Middle Eastern routes.
Disruptions linked to tensions involving Iran have affected travel flows through key Gulf gateways, including Dubai and Doha, creating opportunities for airports in East and Southeast Asia.
Hong Kong is also working to rebuild passenger confidence and connectivity after years of travel restrictions that weakened its standing against regional competitors.
Singapore Changi Airport continues to expand its long-haul connectivity, while Seoul Incheon Airport (ICN) has aggressively pursued transfer traffic and cargo growth.
Industry analysts believe Hong Kong’s infrastructure upgrades, combined with the third runway system and advanced digital processing, could help the airport regain momentum in the highly competitive Asia-Pacific aviation market.
