COLOGNE- Lufthansa (LH) has begun a fleetwide overhaul of its long-haul onboard experience, replacing 187 million service items and upgrading cabin services across all travel classes.
Cologne Bonn Airport (CGN) remains the airline’s headquarters base as Lufthansa prepares for a multi-year transformation starting in 2026.
The airline’s Future Onboard Experience program will modernize service standards, expand meal options, and introduce new amenities to better match passenger expectations.
The rollout begins in First Class in March, followed by Business, Premium Economy, and Economy cabins from May onward.

Lufthansa Begins Project FOX
Lufthansa’s transformation effort, internally called Future Onboard Experience or FOX, represents the airline’s largest change to long-haul service standards.
The program updates both physical products and service delivery across all intercontinental routes, including aircraft without the new Allegris cabin.
Economy Class passengers will receive amenity kits for the first time, improving long-haul comfort. Lufthansa will also introduce a pre-flight menu with three hot meal choices, allowing passengers to select meals before departure.
Premium Economy will receive a significant upgrade to better bridge the gap between Economy and Business Class. Passengers will see improved meal presentation and service elements closer to Business Class standards, AeroTelegraph reported.

Business Class Receives Major Service Changes
Business Class sees the most significant transformation under the FOX program. Lufthansa is redesigning tableware, cabin presentation, and meal service flow.
Passengers will gain greater flexibility in meal timing, allowing them to eat when convenient during the flight rather than following fixed service windows.
A new meal option called Sky Delights will provide additional dining choices, and passengers can select breakfast options before resting, improving sleep and comfort on overnight flights.

First Class Introduces Michelin Level Dining
First Class service will feature a new tasting menu created by a Michelin-starred chef. Lufthansa states that the menu development involved direct passenger feedback to better match expectations.
The airline aims to deliver a premium experience that competes with leading global carriers in luxury service and onboard dining quality.

Massive Logistics Operation Behind the Upgrade
The scale of the project is substantial. Lufthansa will replace 187 million onboard service items within twelve months, including tableware, cutlery, and cabin service elements.
All new items must be delivered across the airline’s worldwide departure and arrival stations, making the rollout one of the largest logistics operations in Lufthansa’s recent history.
The upgrade starts with First Class in late March, with Business, Premium Economy, and Economy cabins following in May as installations continue across the fleet.

A380 Gets New Business Class Seats
Lufthansa is accelerating its fleet renewal by upgrading cabin interiors, starting with Airbus A380 aircraft receiving new Business Class seats.
The retrofit begins in Dresden, and the upgraded A380 will soon return to regular long-haul service from Munich with improved passenger comfort.
Lufthansa is executing the largest fleet modernization program in its history while upgrading cabin interiors across long-haul aircraft. The airline’s Boeing 747-8 and Airbus A350-900 fleets will also receive new cabin products in all travel classes under the ongoing retrofit initiative.
The Airbus A380 retrofit begins at Elbe Flugzeugwerke in Dresden, where aircraft undergo both cabin upgrades and scheduled maintenance checks. Lufthansa benefits from an existing certification for the cabin product, allowing faster implementation without prolonged regulatory approvals.
Passengers will experience the new Business Class configuration within weeks after the aircraft returns to service, significantly reducing downtime during fleet upgrades.
New Business Class Experience on A380
The updated Business Class seats are supplied by manufacturer Thompson and offer a modern layout designed to enhance privacy and comfort.
Each passenger receives direct aisle access, eliminating the need to step over adjacent seats. Seat width measures approximately 58 cm, while beds extend to at least two meters, supporting improved sleep comfort on long-haul routes.
The cabin also introduces Bluetooth connectivity for personal audio devices and adjustable privacy partitions that allow flexible seating arrangements for individual or paired travelers.

Cabin Capacity and Aircraft Role
After retrofit completion, Lufthansa’s A380 will feature:
- 8 First Class seats
- 68 Business Class seats
- 52 Premium Economy seats
- 371 Economy seats
The aircraft remains the largest in Lufthansa’s fleet and continues to serve high-demand intercontinental routes from Munich, which currently hosts the airline’s active A380 operations.
Retrofit Timeline and Fleet Deployment
Routine maintenance work accompanies the cabin upgrade, ensuring the aircraft returns to service fully optimized for operational efficiency.
The first refurbished A380 is scheduled to resume operations from Munich in April, with aircraft gradually returning to the network after refurbishment.
Lufthansa plans to complete retrofits for all eight operational A380 aircraft by mid-2027, marking a key milestone in its fleet modernization strategy.
