GURUGRAM- Air India (AI) is strengthening its international operations from Mumbai (BOM) by deploying new and retrofitted Boeing 787 aircraft under its Vihaan.AI transformation programme.
The expansion focuses on premium product upgrades, improved traffic mix, and higher-yield corporate travel.
The airline will begin operating its newest Boeing 787 on the Mumbai (BOM)–Frankfurt (FRA) route from February 1, while selectively adjusting routes to better align capacity with demand from India’s financial capital.

Air India Expands Mumbai International Flights
Air India (AI) will significantly increase its effective international capacity from Mumbai by inducting new and upgraded Boeing 787 aircraft.
The move is aimed at addressing the city’s strong corporate travel demand, which has remained underserved due to a limited long-haul network.
At present, Air India operates medium- to long-haul international services from Mumbai to Frankfurt (FRA), London (LHR), and New York/Newark (EWR).
In contrast, Delhi (DEL) supports a much wider network covering Europe, East Asia, and Australia. As part of its network realignment, Air India will discontinue its nonstop Mumbai (BOM)–San Francisco (SFO) service from March 1.
According to The Hindu Business Line, the revised strategy is expected to improve both revenue quality and traffic mix rather than simply expand capacity.

Corporate Demand
While Delhi benefits from stronger inbound diaspora and leisure traffic, Mumbai remains India’s largest corporate travel market.
Air India has been unable to fully capitalize on this demand due to its historically constrained international network from the city.
Mumbai previously served as Air India’s main operational base. This changed after the opening of Terminal 3 at Delhi Airport in 2010, followed by the airline shifting its headquarters to the national capital in 2013.
Air India now plans to rebalance this dynamic by upgrading products and expanding capacity on key Mumbai routes.
“We will expand our capacity and upgrade our product on our Mumbai flights,” an airline official said, noting that the initiative is expected to strengthen yields and improve overall route profitability.

Boeing 787 Debut on Mumbai–Frankfurt Route
Air India will deploy its newest Boeing 787 aircraft on the Mumbai (BOM)–Frankfurt (FRA) sector from February 1.
The aircraft features fully flat business-class seats and a new-generation in-flight entertainment system with QLED HDR touchscreens.
Additional passenger-focused upgrades include Bluetooth headphone pairing and wireless charging pads, aligning the onboard experience with global premium standards.
The aircraft was formally unveiled at Begumpet Airport in Hyderabad (HYD), marking a milestone in the airline’s fleet renewal programme.

Fleet Modernization and Route Additions
Alongside new aircraft deliveries, Air India is refurbishing its existing Boeing 787 fleet. The first retrofitted 787 is scheduled to re-enter service in the first quarter of 2026.
By the end of December, the airline expects to operate 20 Boeing 787 aircraft featuring upgraded cabins and enhanced inflight systems.
This approach ensures consistency in product quality across both newly delivered and in-service widebody aircraft.
Sources indicate that Air India is likely to introduce new long-haul routes from Mumbai, including a potential service to Tokyo (HND). The airline may also reintroduce flights to Johannesburg (JNB), restoring connectivity after a gap of several years.
These additions would further strengthen Mumbai’s position as a strategic international gateway alongside Delhi.

Vihaan.AI Vision and Fleet Expansion
The newly inducted Boeing 787-9 is the first production widebody aircraft from Air India’s 470 aircraft order signed 3 years ago.
Although nearly 100 new and leased aircraft have already joined the Air India group fleet since privatisation, this aircraft is the first widebody designed specifically by and for Air India.
Air India CEO and Managing Director Campbell Wilson said the delivery marks a significant milestone in the airline’s 5 year Vihaan.AI transformation programme and reflects its commitment to delivering a world class physical product and inflight entertainment experience while maintaining its core service ethos.
