LAS VEGAS- Hilo has regained a direct air link to the U.S. mainland after more than three years, marking a notable shift in Hawaii’s aviation landscape. Southwest Airlines (WN) has announced a new nonstop route connecting Las Vegas Harry Reid International Airport (LAS) with Hilo International Airport (ITO) on the Big Island.
The new service restores mainland access for eastern Hawaii, which lost nonstop connectivity in early 2023. The route positions Las Vegas as a renewed gateway for Hilo while expanding Southwest’s growing transpacific network.

Southwest’s New Hilo Nonstop
Southwest will launch nonstop flights between Las Vegas and Hilo on August 6. The airline plans to operate the route three times per week from the start.
Flights will depart Las Vegas at 9:30 a.m. and arrive in Hilo at 12:35 p.m. local time. Return services will leave Hilo at 8:45 p.m. and land in Las Vegas at 5:10 a.m. the following day.
The service will operate on Mondays, Thursdays, and Fridays. This schedule supports both leisure travelers and residents seeking faster mainland access.

Mainland Connectivity Restored
Hilo has been without a nonstop mainland route since United Airlines ended its Los Angeles service in early 2023.
The absence forced travelers to rely on inter-island connections or longer itineraries through Kona or Honolulu.
The new Las Vegas route shortens travel times and reduces dependence on connecting flights. It also gives Hilo a direct link to one of the largest connecting hubs in the western United States.
Local officials have welcomed the move as a boost for residents, tourism, and family travel. The route strengthens ties between the Big Island and Las Vegas, a city with longstanding cultural and economic links to Hawaii.

Southwest Hawaii Expansion
The Las Vegas–Hilo route becomes Southwest’s fifth nonstop connection between Las Vegas and Hawaii.
It also complements the carrier’s existing inter-island operations from Hilo, where it currently runs multiple daily flights to Honolulu.
Southwest has recently outlined broader growth plans in the Aloha State. The airline has announced new mainland routes to Honolulu from Southern California markets scheduled to begin next summer.
Hilo, home to roughly 45,000 residents, offers a quieter alternative to Kona with fewer large resort developments.
Improved air access may gradually reshape travel demand while maintaining the city’s smaller-town character.

Bottom Line
Southwest’s new nonstop flight restores Hilo’s direct mainland connectivity after a three-year gap.
The Las Vegas route enhances travel convenience, strengthens regional ties, and reinforces Southwest’s expanding presence in Hawaii.
