CALIFORNIA- Southwest Airlines (WN) has announced a major expansion across the West Coast, introducing five new routes and boosting key frequencies for the summer 2026 schedule. The update includes additional links to Hawaii and expanded service across major Pacific Northwest markets.
The move will strengthen the carrier’s presence at several airports in Southern California, giving travelers more nonstop options and improving access to Honolulu’s Daniel K. Inouye International Airport (HNL).

Southwest Airlines Adds 5 New Routes to Honolulu
Southwest confirmed two all-new nonstop routes from Ontario International Airport (ONT) and Hollywood Burbank Airport (BUR) to Honolulu. The ONT–HNL service begins June 4, 2025, with daily operations, providing suburban Los Angeles travelers a direct alternative to larger hubs.
The BUR–HNL route follows on August 4, 2025, and will operate on peak travel days. These additions expand Southwest’s Hawaii network to 10 nonstop routes between HNL and the U.S. mainland.
Beyond its Hawaii push, Southwest will introduce new flights from Long Beach Airport (LGB) to Portland International Airport (PDX) and Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (SEA).
Both routes launch on August 4 and will operate six times weekly, supporting demand for travel between California and the Pacific Northwest.
The carrier will also begin daily service from San Diego International Airport (SAN) to Santa Barbara Airport (SBA), improving intra-California connectivity and shortening travel times compared to existing ground transportation options, The Points Guy reported.

San Diego Frequency Increase
San Diego will play a central role in the expansion as Southwest doubles daily operations on three significant routes beginning August 4. The SAN–PDX, SAN–SEA, and SAN–Salt Lake City International Airport (SLC) routes will all receive increased service.
Executives said these additions coincide with infrastructure upgrades at several Southern California airports, particularly the new terminal development at SAN, which supports future route growth and operational improvements.
Adam Decaire, Southwest’s senior vice president of network planning and network operations control, stated:
New facilities like those in San Diego and Burbank, along with our onboard customer enhancements, have positioned Southwest to continue offering more for customers in Southern California and beyond for many years to come.”

Competitive Regional Landscape
The changes come amid intensified competition along the West Coast, where Alaska Airlines maintains a strong network footprint in cities such as Portland, Seattle, and San Diego.
Southwest’s added service directly intersects with several Alaska-operated routes, signaling a strategic effort to reinforce its own market share.
The carrier expects to operate a record-high 139 daily departures in San Diego during peak periods in August and September 2026, underscoring the scale of its expansion.

Bottom Line
Southwest’s 2026 West Coast expansion introduces new links to Hawaii, additional flights across the Pacific Northwest, and a substantial capacity boost out of San Diego.
With upgraded airport facilities and strong demand trends, the airline is positioning itself for continued growth across California and beyond.
