LONDON- A United Airlines (UA) Boeing 767-300ER operating flight UA12 from Zurich (ZRH) to Chicago O’Hare (ORD) was forced to divert to London Heathrow (LHR) on Sunday, November 23, after crew members reported fumes in the cabin.
The aircraft was cruising approximately 60 nautical miles north of London when the captain decided to divert. The plane landed at Heathrow just 30 minutes after the decision, ensuring timely medical support and access to emergency services.

United Flight Diverted to London
After departing Zurich at 10:20 a.m., the aircraft experienced a delay of around 40 minutes. During the flight, passengers and crew reported an unusual odor in the cabin, which led to some becoming ill.
The source of the fumes has not been officially disclosed, but such events often involve air contamination from engine or hydraulic systems.
Medical teams were on standby upon landing, and several passengers and crew received treatment immediately after disembarkation. Emergency service vehicles were present as the aircraft taxied to its gate.
Several passengers and flight attendants felt unwell during the flight, prompting the crew to take immediate precautionary measures.

Disruption to Service
The remainder of UA12’s journey to Chicago was canceled. Passengers and crew were accommodated in hotels and provided meal vouchers in London overnight.
