ADELAIDE— A Qantas (QF) flight bound for Canberra (CBR) made an emergency landing shortly after takeoff on Wednesday morning following reports of smoke filling the cabin. All passengers and crew were safely evacuated after the aircraft landed without incident.
The Embraer E190 aircraft, operating as flight QF1972, departed Adelaide Airport (ADL) at approximately 6:10 a.m. before returning safely a few minutes later. According to Qantas, the pilots declared a PAN (Possible Assistance Needed) alert to air traffic control and promptly returned to Adelaide.

Qantas Flight Emergency Landing
Flight tracking data confirmed that QF1972, operated by QantasLink, climbed briefly before making a loop back to Adelaide Airport.
The flight was en route to Canberra when the smoke issue arose. The flight crew’s decision to declare a PAN ensured priority landing clearance, allowing a swift and safe return.
Emergency services were on standby as the aircraft touched down. Passengers disembarked normally using the main air stairs and were later provided with alternate travel arrangements. The airline confirmed that no injuries were reported among the passengers or crew.

Politicians On Board
Among the passengers were three Liberal Party politicians, including South Australian Senator Leah Blyth, who was traveling to attend a key party meeting on net zero emissions in Canberra. Senator Blyth described the experience as “unusual” but not frightening (on Adelaide’s FIVEAA radio station):
It wasn’t scary – it was unusual. Obviously, we fly a fair bit as politicians,” she said during an interview….I’ve never had a cabin fill with smoke quite like that before. That was certainly unusual.
The other two Liberal MPs on board have not been publicly identified. All three continued their journey later in the morning on alternate flights.

Airline Response
A Qantas spokesperson confirmed that flight QF1972 had returned to Adelaide shortly after departure due to reports of smoke in the cabin. The spokesperson quoted in news.com.au added that Qantas engineers would conduct a full inspection of the aircraft before it returns to service:
Our pilots followed standard operating procedures and returned the aircraft to Adelaide as a precaution. The flight landed normally, and all customers and crew disembarked safely,
The airline is working with aviation authorities to determine the source of the smoke. The incident follows Qantas’ continued emphasis on operational safety and reliability, which remains central to the carrier’s reputation as Australia’s flag carrier.
