BENGALURU— A London-bound Virgin Atlantic (VS) flight carrying approximately 270 passengers returned to Kempegowda International Airport, Bengaluru (BLR), on Sunday after developing a technical issue shortly after takeoff.
The aircraft had departed for London Heathrow Airport (LHR) at around 8:20 a.m. before the crew decided to return to Bengaluru as a safety precaution.
The aircraft remained in the area near Tumakuru for more than 30 minutes after the technical problem emerged, according to sources at Bangalore International Airport Limited (BIAL).
The flight then headed back toward Bengaluru and completed an emergency landing at the airport, with all passengers reported safe.
Virgin Atlantic Technical Issue Emerges After Takeoff
The incident began soon after the aircraft left Bengaluru for its scheduled London service. The crew reportedly identified a technical issue while the aircraft was still relatively close to its departure airport and continued to assess the situation before returning.
Rather than continuing the long international journey to London, the crew kept the aircraft near Tumakuru for more than half an hour before bringing it back to Bengaluru.
The decision allowed the aircraft to return to its departure airport instead of proceeding farther along the planned route.
Flight-status information identifies the service as Virgin Atlantic VS317, a Bengaluru-London Heathrow operation scheduled from Terminal 2 at Kempegowda International Airport.
Current flight data lists the aircraft type as a Boeing 787-9 and records the September 6 departure at approximately 8:20 a.m.
Safe Return To BLR With Passengers Safe
The aircraft returned to Kempegowda International Airport after the crew determined that landing back in Bengaluru was the appropriate safety measure. BIAL sources confirmed that all passengers on board were safe following the landing.
The return was handled as an emergency landing, although officials have not disclosed the specific technical malfunction that prompted the decision.
No injuries or additional complications involving passengers were reported in the initial information available after the incident.
