SHANGHAI- China Eastern Airlines (MU) has officially resumed direct passenger flights between Shanghai Pudong International Airport (PVG) and Delhi Indira Gandhi International Airport (DEL). The inaugural service, flight MU563, departed at 13:02 on Sunday with 248 passengers and achieved a load factor exceeding 95 percent.
This marks the first direct China–India passenger flight operated by a Chinese mainland-based airline in 2025. The reinstatement signals a renewed phase of air connectivity between two of Asia’s key economic and cultural hubs.

China Eastern Reconnects Shanghai and Delhi
The Shanghai Pudong–Delhi route, operated by an Airbus A330 wide-body aircraft, currently runs three times a week on Wednesdays, Saturdays, and Sundays. China Eastern Airlines (MU) said the frequency will be reviewed and potentially increased based on passenger demand and market conditions.
In addition to the Shanghai–Delhi service, the airline plans to resume the Kunming–Kolkata route and introduce a new Shanghai–Mumbai service. These routes are part of a broader strategy to strengthen air links between China and India, enhancing bilateral travel, trade, and tourism.
The route’s reopening carries strategic importance as it reestablishes a vital air bridge between two major Asian economies. Direct connectivity between Shanghai (PVG) and Delhi (DEL) is expected to boost exchanges in business, education, and culture, supporting post-pandemic recovery and regional cooperation.

Strengthening China–India Air Links
The resumption follows a five-year pause in direct flights between the Chinese mainland and India. The first step toward restoring air traffic came on October 26, when IndiGo (6E) resumed operations with a Delhi–Guangzhou route, landing at Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport (CAN).
IndiGo, one of India’s largest carriers, has since expanded its China services with a second daily direct flight between Delhi (DEL) and Guangzhou (CAN), scheduled to start on November 10. Operated by Airbus A320 aircraft, this move reflects a growing appetite for direct connectivity between the two countries.
Together, China Eastern and IndiGo’s renewed operations are gradually rebuilding the aviation bridge between China and India, benefiting trade, tourism, and cross-border collaboration.
