Taking a taxi is one of the fastest and most direct ways to travel in a city. Whether heading to the airport, rushing for a meeting, or avoiding crowded public transport, taxis remain a common choice for convenience.
A new report from Deutsche Bank’s Mapping the World’s Prices 2025 highlights how much a standard five-kilometer taxi ride costs in different global cities. The results show a big difference between what passengers pay in Europe, Asia, and North America.

Cities With the Highest Taxi Prices
At the top of the list is Zurich, Switzerland, where a short five-kilometer ride costs around 27.30 US dollars, reports CN Traveler. This makes Zurich the most expensive city in the world for taking a taxi. Close behind is Paris, France, where the same distance costs about 26.50 dollars.
Luxembourg City ranks third at 26 dollars, followed by Geneva, Switzerland, at 25.10 dollars, and London, United Kingdom, at 23.10 dollars.
Other expensive cities include Milan at 22.40 dollars, Brussels at 22.10 dollars, Amsterdam at 21.70 dollars, and Munich at 20.90 dollars.
Even Copenhagen, Denmark, has taxi prices at 20.90 dollars, placing it among the top ten most expensive cities for short-distance travel. These prices reflect both higher living costs and stronger currencies, especially in Western Europe.
Interestingly, Tokyo, Japan, also ranks high with an average of 19.80 dollars for the same ride. In Stockholm, Sweden, and Berlin, Germany, travelers also pay much more than the global average.

Moderate and Mid-Range Fares
Outside the top ten, taxi prices tend to fall but still remain noticeable in several global hubs. Sydney, Australia, charges around 18.60 dollars, while Barcelona, Spain, sits at 17.90 dollars.
Oslo, Norway, and Dublin, Ireland, also appear in the top twenty with average fares around 17 and 16.90 dollars respectively.
In Frankfurt, Germany, the average fare for a five-kilometer trip is 16.50 dollars. Meanwhile, New York City ranks twentieth, where passengers pay about 15.80 dollars for the same distance.
Compared to European rates, New York’s fares seem moderate, but they are still much higher than those in Asia and Africa.
Canadian cities such as Toronto and Vancouver fall into the middle of the list, offering slightly more affordable rides compared to major U.S. or European cities.

Where Taxi Rides Are Cheapest
At the other end of the scale, several cities offer extremely low taxi fares. Cairo, Egypt, ranks as the most affordable city in the world, where a short five-kilometer ride costs just 1.90 dollars.
In Delhi, Mumbai, and Bengaluru, India continues to provide some of the lowest taxi rates globally, with fares ranging from 2 to 2.90 dollars.
Across Southeast Asia, the pattern remains similar. Manila in the Philippines and Jakarta in Indonesia also offer low fares that make local transportation easy and accessible.
These cities benefit from lower fuel prices and a generally lower cost of living, keeping taxi fares budget-friendly.
Even within Europe, there are some cheaper cities. Prague in the Czech Republic is the most affordable among European destinations, where a five-kilometer taxi ride costs around 10.50 dollars—much less than in Paris or Zurich.
Several factors determine how much a taxi ride costs in different cities. Fuel prices, local taxes, vehicle maintenance, and labor costs all play major roles. In cities with strict regulations or higher living standards, fares are naturally higher.
Meanwhile, in developing countries, lower operating costs and stronger competition between local drivers and ride-hailing apps help keep prices down.
Additionally, the rise of app-based ride services such as Uber, Bolt, and Grab has changed local pricing in many cities.
In some places, these apps offer cheaper options than traditional taxis, while in others, they are priced similarly or even higher depending on local demand and surcharges.

How Travelers Can Save
Travelers can save money by planning ahead and comparing transport options. For shorter distances, public transport or walking can be more economical, especially in compact city centers.
In cities like London or Tokyo, where taxis are among the costliest, many travelers prefer subways or trains to avoid high fares and traffic delays.
For those who rely on taxis frequently, using local ride-hailing apps or checking fixed-rate airport transfer services can help manage costs. Many cities also display official fare charts that list rates by distance and time, giving passengers an idea of what to expect before starting the ride.

Bottom Line
Taxi fares vary greatly depending on where you travel, and a quick trip in one city may cost ten times more in another. Zurich, Paris, and Luxembourg top the list for the most expensive rides, while cities like Cairo, Delhi, and Manila remain the most budget-friendly.
For travelers, understanding these price differences helps with budgeting and making smarter transport choices.
Whether catching a flight, exploring a new city, or heading to a hotel after a long journey, it pays to know what a taxi ride might cost before stepping in.
