DALLAS- Southwest Airlines (WN) is setting up a global innovation center in Hyderabad, India, strengthening the city’s position as a technology and aviation hub.

Southwest Airlines Expands Global Innovation Footprint
Southwest Airlines’ (WN) decision to establish its global innovation center in Hyderabad (HYD) marks a significant move in expanding its international technology presence.
The facility will focus on developing next-generation solutions to support the airline’s business evolution, operations, and digital initiatives.
Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy met with the airline’s senior leadership, including Chief Information Officer Lauren Woods, Chief Technology Officer Tom Merritt, Legal Counsel Head Jason Shying, and HEX Advisory Group’s Sarthak Brahma.
The meeting underscored Telangana’s growing role as a preferred destination for global corporations looking to leverage India’s deep technology talent pool.
Reddy highlighted the government’s ongoing efforts to foster innovation through initiatives aligned with the “Telangana Rising 2047” vision. The plan aims to transform the state’s economy into a USD 1 trillion powerhouse by 2034 and achieve USD 3 trillion by 2047.
Hyderabad’s strong infrastructure, skilled workforce, and pro-innovation policies continue to attract leading international companies to set up research and technology operations.

Telangana’s Push Toward a Trillion-Dollar Economy
The Telangana government is positioning itself as a global innovation hub, attracting investments in aviation, IT, and emerging technologies.
By facilitating partnerships with companies like Southwest Airlines, the state reinforces its reputation as a center for digital transformation and sustainable growth.
With its strategic location, talent base, and government support, Hyderabad (HYD) is increasingly becoming a magnet for multinational corporations seeking innovation-driven growth.
The Southwest Airlines project is expected to create new opportunities in software development, data analytics, and operational research—contributing to both local employment and global aviation innovation.

American Airlines and United IT Hub
Fort Worth-based American Airlines (AA) is establishing a new IT and technology hub in Hyderabad, India (HYD). The initiative is designed to leverage Hyderabad’s skilled IT workforce and strengthen the airline’s innovation capabilities across its global operations.
The announcement comes during the Telangana Chief Minister’s visit to the United States, where discussions with corporate leaders and government officials included technology collaboration opportunities.
Dubbed Tech Hub – HYD, the project marks a key step in expanding American Airlines’ (AA) digital and IT infrastructure beyond the United States. The Hyderabad center will work in close coordination with the airline’s existing US-based tech hubs, enhancing agility, resilience, and innovation in its product teams.
The initiative was presented by Ganesh Jayaram, Chief Digital and Information Officer (CDIO) of American Airlines, who highlighted the hub’s strategic role in supporting the airline’s long-term technology goals.
Why Hyderabad Was Chosen
Hyderabad has become one of India’s strongest technology markets, offering a large pool of experienced IT professionals and strong infrastructure support.
By setting up operations here, American Airlines gains access to specialized talent while staying geographically closer to several of its global technology partners.
Focus Areas for the New Hub
The Hyderabad Tech Hub will focus on four key areas:
- Local Talent Integration: Hiring from India’s deep technology talent pool to build high-performance product teams.
- Collaboration with US Teams: Working alongside American’s existing tech hubs to accelerate digital transformation.
- Future-Ready IT Capabilities: Enhancing operational efficiency, data-driven systems, and innovation pipelines.
- Partner Proximity: Establishing stronger ties with regional partners for faster product development and deployment.
Recruitment for the Hyderabad office began in October 2024. Initial leadership roles may be filled by US-based employees before transitioning to local hires.

United Airlines’ Gurgaon Service Office
American Airlines’ move into India mirrors an earlier strategy by another major US carrier. Chicago-based United Airlines (UA) already operates a Service and Technology Office in Gurgaon, which serves as a key center for digital, IT, and operational support functions.
The Gurgaon office manages customer care inquiries and backend IT services for United Airlines, including:
- Flight ticket cancellation and rescheduling
- Immigration and visa-on-arrival assistance
- Baggage allowance and delayed flight handling
- Online, kiosk, and airport check-ins
- In-flight Wi-Fi, entertainment, and duty-free services
- United MileagePlus® program support
- Travel insurance and refund processing
- Airport facilities and lounge services
United’s presence in India highlights how global airlines increasingly rely on India’s technology and service ecosystem to streamline operations and improve customer experience.
