PHILADELPHIA- A passenger on American Airlines (AA) was unexpectedly downgraded from first class on Flight AA2717 from Minneapolis–St. Paul (MSP) to Philadelphia (PHL) to accommodate former U.S. President Joe Biden.
Initially upset about the removal, the traveler later learned the seat was reassigned to Biden. Despite her conservative leanings, she expressed surprising approval after a positive in-person encounter.
American Airlines Passenger Downgraded
On June 28, 2025, a woman flying American Airlines (AA) Flight AA2717 from Minneapolis–St. Paul International Airport (MSP) to Philadelphia International Airport (PHL) shared on social media that she and her husband were downgraded from first class without explanation, flagged OMAAT.
She vented her frustration publicly, questioning which government official caused the reassignment.
Later that day, she revealed that it was former President Joe Biden who was given the seat. The two-hour and 31-minute flight was operated by an Airbus A319, American Airlines’ aircraft with the smallest first-class cabin, just eight seats.
The traveler, known for posting conservative views online, experienced a surprising shift in sentiment after interacting with Biden. She took photos with him, had a book signed, and even requested a birthday autograph for her daughter.
The former president was seen reading How the Irish Saved Civilization and posing with crew members during the flight.
Despite previously labeling Biden as “trash” in earlier posts, her comments following the interaction reflected a softened view, stating, “I guess it’s okay he bumped my husband out of first class.”

Presidential Travel Protocol
Biden was returning from a high-profile funeral in Minnesota for former Minnesota House Speaker Melissa Hortman, who was recently assassinated.
Given the nature of the trip and Biden’s status, it is standard protocol for airlines to accommodate security requirements, often resulting in last-minute seating changes.
Airlines like American (AA) are generally cooperative with the Secret Service, especially when former presidents are involved. These arrangements prioritize safety and confidentiality, particularly on aircraft like the A319 with limited premium seating.
Upon arrival at PHL, Biden was escorted directly from the aircraft to a waiting SUV, drawing attention from airport staff and passengers, many of whom were aware of his presence.
The incident, initially framed as a political grievance, evolved into a rare example of civil interaction between individuals with opposing viewpoints.
While some may view the airline’s decision as controversial, the context underscores a more practical and humanized side of air travel accommodations involving high-profile figures.
