Adding 40% Capacity to Dublin
United Airlines will significantly boost its transatlantic connectivity by expanding seat capacity between the United States and Dublin for the summer of 2025.
The carrier will implement a comprehensive route enhancement strategy starting 29 March 2025, focusing on increasing frequency and aircraft capacity.
By doubling Washington DC-Dublin service to twice-daily and upgrading the Chicago-Dublin route from a Boeing 757-200 to a larger 787-8 Dreamliner, United anticipates a 40% increase in seat capacity to Ireland’s capital.
The expansion intensifies competition with Aer Lingus (EI), which operates flights from both Chicago and Washington to Dublin, and American Airlines (AA) seasonal Chicago-Dublin service.
This move aligns with United’s previously announced ambitious international expansion plan, which includes six new destinations and eight additional Atlantic routes to cities like Bilbao, Faro, Nice, and Venice.
Executive Remarks
Graeme McQueen from Dublin Airport emphasizes the strategic importance of increased transatlantic connectivity, noting the expansion signals robust travel demand between Ireland and North America. The additional services underscore the critical need to remove passenger capacity restrictions at Dublin Airport.
The route enhancement promises substantial economic advantages, potentially attracting more US tourists and generating positive impacts on Ireland’s jobs, economic sectors, and hospitality industry. Chicago and Washington routes, already popular among Irish travelers, will see increased connectivity and accessibility.
Karolien De Hertogh from United Airlines reinforces the carrier’s commitment to providing enhanced travel options, highlighting the summer 2025 schedule’s expanded choices for Irish customers.
Travelers will benefit from improved access to United’s extensive network, with seamless connections through hubs in New York/Newark, Chicago O’Hare, and Washington D.C., enabling travel to over 150 destinations across the Americas.
