DOHA – After a four-year hiatus, Qatar Airways (QR) has announced the resumption of daily flights to Canberra (CBR) via Melbourne (MEL) starting December 2025. The daily flight will be operated by the Boeing 777, equipped with the airline’s Qsuite Business Class and complimentary Starlink Wi-Fi.
This marks a significant milestone for the airline as it plans to reconnect the Australian capital with its vast global network of over 170 destinations through its Hamad International Airport (DOH) hub. Following this announcement, Canberra becomes Qatar Airways’ sixth destination in Australia.
Qatar Airways Canberra Flights
Qatar Airways originally launched flights to Canberra in 2018 via Sydney (SYD), but the route was suspended in early 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. A planned restart in 2022 via Melbourne faced delays and eventual cancellation, reportedly due to operational challenges and unresolved agreements with ground handling services.
Qatar Airways Group CEO, Engr. Badr Mohammed Al-Meer, emphasized the importance of the route, stating, “We are delighted to be able to serve Canberra once again. The nation’s capital, the political heart of Australia, rightly expects to be served by a range of international airlines. Whether traveling for business, government services, or leisure, our commitment to Canberra will bring much-needed healthy competition and greater choice for passengers.”
The service is expected to boost Canberra’s connectivity with key global destinations, particularly in Europe, the United Kingdom, and the Middle East. Canberra Airport CEO Stephen Byron described the return of Qatar Airways as a “pivotal moment,” adding that it will open up opportunities for over one million residents in the region.
“This service not only provides access to a global network but also drives economic development, creates jobs, and fosters tourism. It enhances connectivity and strengthens business connections while supporting the Government’s goal of AU$5 billion in visitor expenditure by 2030.”

Qatar Airways – Virgin Atlantic Partnership
The resumed route also aligns with Qatar Airways’ ongoing partnership with Virgin Australia (VA), pending regulatory approvals. This collaboration will enable seamless connectivity for passengers traveling from Canberra to more than 100 destinations across Europe, Africa, and the Middle East.
Loyalty members from both Qatar Airways Privilege Club and Virgin Australia’s Velocity Frequent Flyer programs can enjoy expanded benefits, including earning and redeeming points and reciprocal lounge access.
ACT Chief Minister Andrew Barr welcomed the announcement, highlighting its positive impact on local tourism and international student attraction. He noted, “Aviation access is the biggest driver of growth in the sector. Qatar Airways’ return will benefit the entire Canberra region, creating tourism, trade, and investment opportunities.”
