HONG KONG- Cathay Pacific (CX) is in talks with an aircraft manufacturer such as Boeing for a new widebody order. The announcement might come by next year (2025) as reported by Bloomberg.
The Hong-based carrier recently unveiled its new business-class seat, the “Aria Suite,” which made its debut on Boeing 777-300ER aircraft.
Cathay Pacific Widebody Order
Alex McGowan, Chief Operations and Service Delivery Officer told Bloomberg about why they are hurrying up to place a new widebody order.
Cathay is consistently placing orders for long-haul aircraft as it will slowly phase out old 777-300 and 300ER aircraft and A330s.
The airline placed an order worth $11 Billion for 30 Airbus A330neo aircraft, which are considered as the medium to long haul jet. Cathay has also secured additional slots for 30 more aircraft.
McGowan told Bloomberg that the review will consider widebody jets ranging from Boeing 787 to the 777-9 (777X). The upcoming order will mark “the final component” in a series of recent aircraft acquisitions.
Cathay might place an order with Airbus as well as McGowan said the range from 787-8 to 777-9 which also includes A330neos, A350-900, and A350-1000 aircraft.
Similar to major Asian carriers, Cathay Pacific operates on hub and spoke model. It has a fleet of 167 aircraft and only 15 are narrowbody Airbus A321 jets. The rest of the fleet as per the planespotters.net data includes:
Aircraft Type | Current | Avg. Age | Total | ||
---|---|---|---|---|---|
In Service | – | ||||
Airbus A330 | 36 | 16.2 Years | 60 | ||
Airbus A350 XWB | 45 | 6.1 Years | 48 | ||
Boeing 747 | 20 | 13.1 Years | 84 | ||
Boeing 777 | 51 | 15.7 Years | 75 |
These also include sub-variants such as A350-900, A350-1000, 747-400, 747-8, 777-300, and 777-300ER.
Cathay does not operate Boeing 787 Dreamliner yet so it will be a new type addition to already a diverse fleet of long-haul and ultra-long-haul fleet.

Supporting Sustainable development
Cathay pledges active support for Hong Kong’s aviation development as the city’s flagship carrier. The airline group commits to serving 100 global destinations by 2025, demonstrating its role in expanding Hong Kong’s international connectivity.
The world is moving towards sustainable development and so does Cathay. Cathay Pacific was one of the first airlines globally to set a target of 10% Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) for total fuel use by 2030. Since then, the airline has completed SAF uplifts at Hong Kong International Airport and other international locations.
Alongside expanding SAF use, Cathay focuses on fleet modernization, operational efficiency, emerging technologies, and high-quality carbon offsets and removals to reach its goal of net-zero carbon emissions by 2050.
