Qantas Brisbane to Manila Flights
Qantas Airways inaugurated nonstop flights between Brisbane and Manila this week, eliminating layovers for travelers between Queensland and the Philippines. The service marks a significant expansion of direct connections between Australia and Southeast Asia.
The airline deploys Airbus A330 aircraft on the route, operating four weekly flights. This addition injects over 100,000 new seats annually into the Australia-Philippines market, complementing Qantas’ daily Sydney-Manila services.
The new route strengthens travel options for New Zealand passengers, creating streamlined connections through Brisbane for travelers from Auckland and Christchurch to reach Manila.
Qantas’ relationship with the Philippines dates back to 1947 when Lancastrian aircraft supported Australian military operations. The airline introduced commercial Super Constellation flights in 1950, followed by the groundbreaking Boeing 707 services from Sydney in 1961, which eliminated the need for stopovers.
The carrier currently provides more than 300,000 seats annually between the two countries. The upcoming year 2025 will mark Qantas’ 75th anniversary of passenger services connecting Australia and the Philippines.
CEO Insights
Qantas International CEO Cam Wallace announced the launch of direct Brisbane-Manila flights, citing strong market demand for Philippine services. The new route eliminates Sydney layovers for Queensland travelers, offering faster access to the Philippines.
Wallace highlighted the Philippines’ appeal as a tourist destination, emphasizing its historical significance, a diverse archipelago of 7,000 islands, and renowned hospitality culture.
Brisbane Airport CEO Gert-Jan de Graaff underscored the service’s economic implications, noting the Philippines’ position as a rapidly growing economy and crucial Queensland trading partner. The route serves the substantial Filipino community in Queensland while fostering expanded business and tourism opportunities.
This launch extends Qantas’ recent international expansion from Brisbane, which includes new services to Palau, upgraded Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner operations to Auckland and Los Angeles, new flights to Port Vila, and increased Singapore frequencies.
Flight QF97 connects Brisbane to Manila four times weekly, departing Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Saturday. The journey spans 7 hours and 45 minutes.
Qantas operates these routes using Airbus A330 aircraft, configured with 27 business class suites arranged in a 1-2-1 layout. Each suite provides direct aisle access and converts into a lie-flat bed. The aircraft accommodates 269 economy passengers.
