ATLANTA- A collision between two Delta (DL) aircraft occurred at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport on Tuesday morning.
Delta Air Lines Flight DL295, an Airbus A350 bound for Tokyo Haneda (HND), struck Endeavor Air Flight 5526, a Bombardier CRJ900 destined for Lafayette, Louisiana, with its wingtip.
Delta A350 Collided with Endeavor
The incident took place shortly after 10 a.m. as the Delta flight was taxiing for departure. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) reports that the planes were on alternate taxiways when the collision happened.
The Tokyo-bound flight carried 221 passengers, while the Louisiana flight had 56 people on board. No injuries were reported, according to a spokesperson for Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport.
The aircraft involved in the incident is Airbus A350-900, registered as N503DN. Further, it is a 7-year-old aircraft powered by Rolls Royce (RR) Trent XWB-84.
Passengers from the damaged Endeavor Air flight were seen deplaning in photos and videos following the collision. Delta Airlines has stated that affected passengers will be accommodated on alternate flights.
The size difference between the two aircraft is significant. The Airbus A350, one of Delta’s largest planes, weighs approximately 600,000 pounds when fueled. In contrast, the Bombardier CRJ900, among the smallest in Delta’s fleet, weighs around 70,000 pounds.
Airport operations have experienced minimal impact from the incident. The FAA has announced it will investigate the collision to determine its cause and any potential safety implications.
Similar Incident
On August 31, 2024, the Delta Air Lines Airbus A330 aircraft collided with Virgin Atlantic (VS) Airbus A350 aircraft at the world’s busiest airport, Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport.
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) in its aviation safety information analysis and sharing reported this incident on September 4, 2024.
According to the FAA preliminary report, Delta Air Lines flight DAL105 operated with Airbus A330-300 left wingtip struck the stabilizer of Virgin Atlantic flight VS104/VIR104L operated using an A350-1000 aircraft during taxing.
We tried to establish a flight connection using Flight Radar 24 and discovered that the incident occurred when a Delta plane was taxing and turning from Taxiway L onto Taxiway LC. The collision was so subtle that damage was unknown in Atlanta and both flights took off from Atlanta.
Despite colliding with a Virgin Atlantic plane, Delta flight DL105 from Atlanta to Sao Paulo (SAO) took off and landed safely at SAO with a damaged winglet.
The Aviation A2Z Team contacted Delta Air Lines and they issued the following statement:
“Delta is fully cooperating with investigators in a review of Delta flight 105 on August 31 from Atlanta to Sao Paulo, where damage to a winglet was identified after landing. The flight departed, operated, and landed safely.”
There were 284 passengers, 10 flight attendants and three pilots. Delta said that they cannot comment further to ensure the full integrity of the authorities’ review.
