NEW YORK- American Airlines (AA) is gearing up to launch Boeing 787 flights from New York (JFK) later this year, establishing a hub for its Boeing 787 Dreamliners in the city during the upcoming summer.
Currently, American operates the Boeing 777 from its New York (JFK) hub and the Boeing 787 from Philadelphia (PHL).
American Airlines New York-Delhi with 787
Given this change, substantial planning and adjustments will be necessary. The Boeing 787 aligns well with American’s New York operations, providing ample premium capacity while maintaining a lower overall capacity compared to the Boeing 777-300ER.
Operations from the New York City (NYC) hub are anticipated to commence in the late summer. American Airlines intends to station 40 pilots in New York, comprising 20 captains and 20 first officers. Training for pilots requiring proficiency on the Boeing 787 Dreamliner is slated to begin in August.
As reported by OMAT, the potential new routes for the Boeing 787 aircraft may encompass destinations such as London (LHR), Tokyo (HND), and Delhi (DEL). Additionally, there is a possibility of exploring lower-demand European and transcontinental routes that utilize the smaller Boeing 787-8 variant.
The London route stands out due to its substantial premium capacity, catering to business travelers and making it an ideal fit for the Boeing 787. The forthcoming launch of Japan flights provides an opportune moment to introduce a premium class product, enhancing competitiveness against other carriers.
For American Airlines’ Delhi route, payload restrictions make the Boeing 787 an excellent choice for replacing the existing Boeing 777-300ER aircraft. These changes are anticipated to come into effect from late October 2024, featuring a standard Boeing 787-9.
Replacing 777
In New York, there is a consistent demand for premium seat accommodations, making it a strategic hub. Given that the Boeing 787 provides a greater number of overall premium class seating compared to the Boeing 777, it is more suitable for operations in NYC, aligning with the existing demand for this service.
The Fort Worth-based carrier is slated to receive 30 Boeing 787-9s, all configured with an ultra-premium layout.
These aircraft feature a brand-new business-class product, making them well-suited for American’s New York City hub, where there is a high demand for premium seat services while maintaining a lower overall capacity than the Boeing 777-300ER.
