Vistara, a joint venture of TATA Group and Singapore Airlines and a full-service carrier in India, achieved a significant milestone today by becoming the first Indian airline to operate a commercial, domestic flight on a wide-body aircraft using sustainable aviation fuel (SAF).
The airline accomplished this feat by flying a Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner from Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA) in Delhi to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport in Mumbai.
Vistara SAF Flight
It used a mixture of 17% SAF and 83% conventional jet fuel for this flight. The special flight resulted in a reduction of approximately 10,000 pounds of CO₂ emissions. Vistara’s commitment to reducing its carbon footprint and supporting a sustainable future for the aviation industry is evident in this pioneering initiative.
Vistara achieved a milestone last month by operating a long-haul international flight using sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), a first for an Indian airline.
The flight was a ferry flight from Charleston International Airport in South Carolina to Indira Gandhi International Airport in Delhi.
It used a blend of 30% SAF and 70% conventional jet fuel, reducing approximately 150,000 pounds of CO2 emissions over the fuel’s life cycle. Subsequently, this move aligns with Vistara’s efforts to reduce its carbon footprint. Further, promote a sustainable future for the aviation industry.
Mr Vinod Kannan, CEO of Vistara, expressed his thoughts on the achievement, stating,
“At Vistara, we have consistently prioritized sustainability and innovation in aviation. We are thrilled to have accomplished another industry-first by operating a commercial wide-body flight with SAF. Further, we extend our gratitude to our partners. Subsequently, to the authorities involved for their valuable support.”

Sustainability is Priority
Vistara, together with other airlines under the TATA group, has been actively focusing on decreasing carbon emissions by utilizing sustainable technologies.
In the previous year, Vistara signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research – Indian Institute of Petroleum to collaborate on research, development, and deployment of sustainable aviation fuels (SAFs).
Furthermore, Vistara is participating in the Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation (CORSIA) to reduce CO2 emissions for international flights and mitigate the aviation industry’s impact on climate change.
