Air India pilots’ unions have expressed their grievances with the management, citing extended working hours, and reached out to Ratan Tata, the Chairman Emeritus of Tata Sons.

Air India Pilots writes to Ratan Tata
In their letter, the pilots have expressed their confidence in Ratan Tata’s leadership to aid in finding a fair and respectful solution for all parties involved. Subsequently, the letter was prompted by Air India’s failure to address the pilots’ concerns. Regarding the airline’s newly announced work conditions and pay structure.
Air India, which the Tata Group owns, recently unveiled a revised salary structure for pilots and cabin crew. But the changes were met with dissatisfaction among the staff. Further, the pilots’ main objection was the promotion of captains with over four years of experience to management positions.
Air India has informed all of its employees, including pilots and crew members. Furthermore, the airline has recently announced a revision of their employment contracts and compensation structure for flying staff.
Pilot Union Statements
At a town hall meeting on April 25, Air India did not address inquiries regarding the revised pay structure for its pilots. In response to this, an Air India pilot stated that it is crucial for pilots to be given a platform to voice their opinions. Particularly during this significant time in Air India’s aviation journey.
The pilot emphasized that there must be greater cooperation between the management and the pilots. To ensure efficient operations and robust growth.
The chief of Tata Group Airlines held a meeting shortly after the Indian Commercial Pilots’ Association (ICPA) and Indian Pilots’ Guild (IPG) sent legal notices to Air India on April 21. Prior to this, both unions had advised their members not to accept the revised terms of employment.
The pilots directed their grievances towards the HR department. Stating that they were encountering challenges with the department’s current policies.
“Our concerns are not being heard or addressed by the current HR team,” said the letter. Further, the letter also underlined how the issue is affecting their morale. “Our morale is low. We are concerned this will affect our ability to perform our duties,” they said.
The pilots sought Ratan Tata’s assistance in addressing their issues while insisting that they “would not have disturbed you had this issue not been this important.” Subsequently, the Air India pilots have also sought Tata Sons Chairman N Chandrasekaran’s intervention to resolve the issue.
