AirAsia X arrived straight from Kuala Lumpur this morning for the first time in three years, marking the return of direct flights from Malaysia to Queensland.
The service had been running between the two cities ever since AirAsia X’s 1st aircraft touched down on the Gold Coast in 2007, but it was suspended during the pandemic.
Amelia Evans, CEO of Queensland Airports said
Through the Attracting Aviation Investment Fund, Queensland Airports Limited, the Department of Tourism, Innovation, and Sport, the Gold Coast City Council, and Destination Gold Coast have worked together to bring it back to Queensland.
Amelia Evans, CEO of Queensland Airports Limited, stated that the return of AirAsia X to the Gold Coast would result in three round-trip flights between Kuala Lumpur and the Gold Coast each week, adding 58,000 extra seats to the area each year.
More than 2 million passengers have flown between Kuala Lumpur and the Gold Coast since the first AirAsia X aircraft took off from that city in 2007, according to Ms. Evans.
The reinstatement of this service, she continued, “re-establishes an important connection between two major tourism and economic hubs at a competitive price for international travel, and an important partnership with Air Asia X for the future.”
AirAsia X is back
We’re also delighted to have welcomed AirAsia X back to our brand-new International Terminal, giving travelers an improved experience as soon as they land in the Gold Coast and the surrounding area. Mrs. Evans stated.
Onboard this morning’s flight to the Gold Coast, Benyamin Ismail, CEO of AirAsia X, accompanied the passengers.
AirAsia X’s return to the Gold Coast, which was the company’s first route and was introduced in November 2007, makes today a particularly significant day for the company, according to Mr. Ismail said.
“The Gold Coast will always hold a special place in our hearts,” he said. “What makes this announcement even more of a major milestone is that AAX is now the only airline connecting Kuala Lumpur directly to the Gold Coast and Queensland.”
“Our newest route now offers the most practical and affordable air travel option for guests who want to explore one of Australia’s most well-known tourist destinations, linking travelers through Kuala Lumpur from locations such as Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam, India, and more.”

The Gold Coast‘s visitor industry is expected to benefit from AirAsia X to the tune of $45.6 million, according to Tourism Minister Stirling Hinchliffe.
Non-stop flights from Kuala Lumpur
The $200 million aviation war chest of the Palaszczuk Government, in collaboration with Gold Coast Airport, has secured these direct flights from Kuala Lumpur, according to Mr. Hinchliffe.
We’re supporting AirAsia X in part because of its promise to expand its Gold Coast travel schedule to five days per week by the end of the year. The 450 excellent Queensland jobs these services will support and the visitor economy of the Gold Coast are both greatly benefited by AirAsia X.
“It’s wonderful to welcome Malaysian visitors back to Queensland to experience our fantastic lifestyle and the world-class vacation opportunities on the Gold Coast.” The region’s first AirAsia X travelers were welcomed by Gold Coast Mayor Tom Tate. “International travel for business and pleasure is essential to the expansion of the visitor industry.”
We place a high value on solid relationships with airlines like AirAsia X, which has been a part of the foreign connections for our city since 2007. “It’s wonderful to see them back on the runway, carrying more tourists to the Gold Coast and transporting Australians to Malaysia and beyond.”
AirAsia X’s return to the Gold Coast, a key entryway to the South East Asian market and beyond, was warmly greeted by Interim CEO of Destination Gold Coast Karen Bolinger.
“Within an hour’s drive, the Gold Coast is a vibrant city surrounded by golden beaches, lush ancient rainforests, a delectable dining scene, world-class exhibitions, shopping, and more than 160 immersive experiences,” Ms. Bolinger said.
“We couldn’t be more thrilled for AirAsia X’s touchdown back to our shores in what marks a significant milestone globally as the Gold Coast’s visitor economy is rebuilt,” the statement continued.
