KUALA LUMPUR- Due to the rise in international traffic from India, Malaysia Airlines (MH), headquartered in Kuala Lumpur (KUL), is set to boost its flight capacity or frequencies to India by more than 25% in 2024 compared to the previous year.
Captain Iham Ismail, the Group Managing Director of Malaysia Aviation Group, mentioned to FE that the airline’s load factors on routes to India have surpassed 80%.
Malaysia Airlines India Flights
Malaysia Airlines aims to transport around 2 million passengers from India-based destinations in the fiscal year 2024.
In the fourth quarter of 2023, the airline bolstered its connectivity to India by introducing three new routes: Amritsar, Trivandrum, and Ahmedabad.
“We have recently increased frequencies… This expansion has helped us cross our pre-pandemic levels of operation in the market,” stated Captain Iham Ismail.
Presently, the airline conducts 69 weekly flights from nine Indian destinations, encompassing Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kochi, Amritsar, Trivandrum, and Ahmedabad.
Furthermore, the augmentation of flight frequencies from Trivandrum – set to increase from two to four times weekly starting April 2024 – will elevate the total count of weekly flights to 71.
New Indian Routes
As per Ismail, the airline intends to gradually introduce new routes in response to the growing travel demand.
“Over the next few years, we are looking to explore the northeast region, including Guwahati and Kolkata, along with potential routes to southern destinations like Trichy, Vizag, and Goa,” he mentioned.
He noted that the airline achieved a 20% increase in market share in 2023 compared to 2019.
“Our strategic objective for 2025 is to further this progress by doubling the improvement to 40% compared to our 2023 performance,” he added.
Additionally, the airline is actively working on establishing a comprehensive codeshare partnership with an Indian carrier. Currently, the airline has an interline agreement in place with Vistara Airlines (UK).
