BERLIN- Discover Airlines (4Y), Lufthansa Group’s leisure-focused airline, plans to expand and modernize its long-haul fleet with 13 Airbus A350-900 aircraft, strengthening its capacity for long-distance holiday routes. The expansion will begin in 2027 with four aircraft previously operated by Lufthansa, followed by nine factory-new A350s from 2029 onwards.
The fleet expansion will take place in two phases, allowing Discover Airlines to introduce additional aircraft while gradually increasing its long-haul operations. The first A350 is expected to enter service in June 2027, initially operating short-haul flights for crew familiarization before launching long-haul services from Frankfurt Airport (FRA) to Calgary International Airport (YYC) and Orlando International Airport (MCO).

Discover Gets Lufthansa’s Four A350s First
The initial phase will involve four A350-900s currently flying for Lufthansa from Munich. Discover Airlines expects the second aircraft to join its fleet in December 2027, while the third and fourth are scheduled to arrive during the summer of 2028.
All four aircraft will support the airline’s expansion of long-haul operations from its German bases.
The second aircraft will introduce additional A350 services to Central America. From December 14, 2027, Discover Airlines will take over Lufthansa’s Frankfurt-San JosĂ© service in Costa Rica, increasing the route’s frequency from five to six flights per week.
Two of those six weekly services will operate as triangular flights, continuing from Juan SantamarĂa International Airport (SJO) to Philip S. W. Goldson International Airport (BZE), serving Belize City.
This will make Belize City a new destination in Discover Airlines’ network, while San JosĂ© will transfer from Lufthansa to its leisure subsidiary.
The first A350 will follow a different introduction strategy. Discover Airlines plans to operate it on a high-frequency short-haul route during its initial weeks to familiarise crews with the aircraft before deploying it on longer services.
Its first long-haul assignment will likely be Frankfurt-Calgary or Frankfurt-Orlando. The airline has not yet confirmed which destination will receive the aircraft first, although both routes offer established services with frequencies of up to daily flights.

Long-Haul Fleet Growth
The A350 programme will significantly change Discover Airlines’ long-haul fleet composition. The airline currently operates 15 Airbus A330-300s after retiring its final A330-200, an aircraft that was approximately 22 years old, during the week of its October 29 announcement.
Discover Airlines expects its long-haul fleet to reach 20 aircraft by mid-2028, including the four A350-900s transferred from Lufthansa. The airline will then introduce nine additional factory-new A350-900s from 2029 onwards, gradually replacing its existing A330-300 fleet.
The A350’s extended range will also give the airline greater flexibility when developing its leisure network.
Discover Airlines has identified South America, Central America, southern Africa and Southeast Asia as regions where the aircraft could open opportunities for destinations beyond the reach of its existing long-haul fleet.

New Cabin Product
Alongside the aircraft expansion, Discover Airlines is preparing to improve its existing long-haul passenger experience through a new cabin product called Ocean Blue.
The airline plans to introduce the updated product on its Airbus A330-300 fleet during 2027, with the rollout expected to cover approximately one aircraft per month.
The cabin improvements are part of a broader effort to provide a more consistent onboard experience as the airline grows.
However, Discover Airlines has not yet confirmed the specific cabin configuration or business-class seating arrangements that will feature on its nine factory-new A350-900s.
The airline currently operates 33 aircraft, comprising 15 A330s and 18 A320s, and employs approximately 2,200 people, OMAAT flagged. The addition of 13 A350s will give its long-haul operations a more modern aircraft platform while supporting the Lufthansa Group’s expansion in the leisure travel market.
