JOHANNESBURG— Virgin Atlantic (VS) will introduce the Airbus A350-1000 on its daily service between London Heathrow (LHR) and Johannesburg (JNB) from October 25, 2026, before adding three weekly Boeing 787-9 services in December. The expansion coincides with the airline’s 30th anniversary of serving South Africa and will increase flight options between the two cities.
The additional services will raise Virgin Atlantic’s scheduled Johannesburg–London operation to 10 weekly flights when the new December frequencies are introduced. The expanded schedule will also give passengers more opportunities to connect through London Heathrow to destinations across North America, the Caribbean and Europe.

Virgin Atlantic’s A350-1000 Daily Service
The Airbus A350-1000 will operate Virgin Atlantic’s existing daily service in both directions, replacing the aircraft previously assigned to the route for the winter season.
The upgraded schedule will retain flight numbers VS449 from London Heathrow to Johannesburg and VS450 from Johannesburg to London Heathrow.
The A350-1000 offers three cabin categories: Upper Class, Premium and Economy. Its introduction brings the airline’s latest-generation long-haul aircraft to the Johannesburg route as Virgin Atlantic prepares for higher seasonal demand.
From December, the airline will supplement the daily A350-1000 operation with three weekly return services using Boeing 787-9 aircraft.
Flight VS461 will operate from London Heathrow to Johannesburg on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays from December 13, while VS462 will fly from Johannesburg to London Heathrow on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from December 14.
The additional frequencies will give travellers more departure options across the week, particularly during the busy summer holiday period in South Africa. Passengers will also have further opportunities to plan connecting journeys through Heathrow.

30 Years In South Africa
The schedule expansion marks three decades since Virgin Atlantic began serving South Africa, a market that links the United Kingdom with business, tourism and visiting-friends-and-relatives travel.
The airline said the revised timetable is intended to offer greater flexibility for customers travelling between Johannesburg and London.
Marc Harding, Virgin Atlantic’s country manager for South Africa, highlighted the role of customers, employees and partners in sustaining the airline’s presence in the country.
He said the anniversary reflected the relationships built over 30 years and expressed confidence in further opportunities for the airline and South Africa, Biz Community flagged.
Virgin Atlantic is a member of SkyTeam, giving eligible passengers access to alliance-related frequent-flyer benefits and connections through partner airlines. Its other airline partnerships also provide onward travel options beyond London.

Johannesburg Passenger Services
Passengers departing Johannesburg may use Virgin Atlantic’s Johannesburg Clubhouse if eligible. The lounge offers locally inspired dining, regional wines and spirits, showers, luggage storage and pre-departure facilities.
The airline’s expanded schedule combines a daily Airbus A350-1000 service with additional Boeing 787-9 flights, increasing choice on one of its established long-haul routes.
The changes are timed to support demand during South Africa’s summer and year-end holiday season, while maintaining connections through London Heathrow to the airline’s wider network.
