LONDON- British Airways (BA) has closed its premium lounge at Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) for a major refurbishment that will introduce the airline’s latest Global Lounge Concept. The upgraded facility is expected to reopen in summer 2027.
The investment comes as British Airways (BA) marks 80 years of transatlantic services between London and New York, while also advancing its Airbus A380 cabin refurbishment program and expanding Starlink WiFi installation across parent company IAG’s long-haul fleet, HfP reported.

British Airways Modernises Newark Premium Lounge
British Airways has begun a comprehensive $15 million refurbishment of its Galleries Lounge at Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) in New Jersey. The lounge has temporarily closed and is scheduled to reopen during summer 2027.
The project introduces the airline’s Global Lounge Concept to Newark, making it the third location to receive the new design after lounges in Dubai International Airport (DXB) and Miami International Airport (MIA).
The refurbishment also aligns with a significant milestone for the airline. British Airways is celebrating the 80th anniversary of its London to New York operations. On July 1, 1946, BOAC, British Airways’ predecessor, operated its first commercial landplane service using a Lockheed Constellation L-049, flying from London to LaGuardia Airport (LGA) via refueling stops at Shannon and Gander. The journey took nearly 20 hours.
Today, New York remains British Airways’ largest long-haul market. The airline operates 11 daily flights between London Heathrow Airport (LHR) and the New York metropolitan area, including two daily services to Newark (EWR). Heathrow to New York John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) is widely regarded as one of the world’s most valuable international airline routes.

New Design Inspired by New Jersey and British Heritage
British Airways is once again working with global architecture firm Gensler to redesign the Newark lounge.
According to the airline, the new interior draws inspiration from New Jersey’s coastline and industrial heritage, while incorporating signature British Airways design elements.
Early design images show a more understated appearance than the Dubai and Miami lounges. Instead of heavy gold finishes, the Newark lounge features warmer wood textures, blue accents, and contemporary furnishings that create a modern yet refined atmosphere.
Several design highlights include:
- A blue glazed tile reception podium inspired by London’s Underground stations.
- Herringbone wood flooring reflecting the airline’s business class design language.
- Floor to ceiling windows overlooking the airport runway.
- A redesigned staffed bar serving as the lounge’s central feature.
- Fully refurbished shower suites and bathrooms.
- A dedicated Concorde Dining Room expected for eligible First Class passengers and Gold Guest List members.
During the refurbishment period, eligible British Airways passengers are expected to use an alternative partner lounge at Newark.
British Airways has also confirmed future lounge investments at Boston Logan International Airport (BOS) and San Francisco International Airport (SFO). However, the airline has not provided any new timeline for the long-awaited refurbishment of its lounges at London Heathrow Airport (LHR).

Airbus A380 Cabin Upgrade Moves Forward
Alongside its lounge investments, British Airways has confirmed that refurbishment work on its Airbus A380 fleet has officially started.
Two aircraft are currently undergoing maintenance and cabin upgrades in Manila, where Lufthansa Technik performs heavy maintenance for the airline.
The retrofit represents one of British Airways’ largest cabin modernization projects in recent years.
The updated aircraft will introduce:
- A completely new First Class suite.
- Refreshed premium cabin interiors.
- Updated passenger amenities.
- Modernized cabin finishes.
The new First Class seat is being manufactured by Collins Aerospace in Northern Ireland and has been developed specifically for British Airways. As a brand new product, it must complete extensive certification before entering commercial service.
Although British Airways still expects the first refurbished Airbus A380 to return to passenger operations during 2026, cabin retrofits of this scale typically require several months for installation, testing, and regulatory approval.
Industry experience suggests that prototype aircraft often spend considerably longer in maintenance than later retrofit aircraft because every component must undergo detailed certification.

Starlink Expansion Continues Across IAG Fleet
British Airways’ parent company International Airlines Group (IAG) has also outlined plans to accelerate deployment of Starlink satellite internet across its long haul airlines.
IAG aims to equip around 50 percent of its long haul fleet with Starlink connectivity by the end of the year.
The rollout covers multiple airlines within the group, including:
- British Airways (BA)
- Iberia (IB)
- Aer Lingus (EI)
- LEVEL (LL)
British Airways is currently installing Starlink primarily during scheduled aircraft maintenance visits. This approach helps reduce operational disruption but also slows the pace of deployment compared with airlines that install equipment outside routine maintenance schedules.
With approximately 131 long haul aircraft across the IAG fleet, achieving the group’s target will require a rapid increase in installation activity during the remainder of the year.

British Airways Continues Premium Product Investment
The Newark lounge renovation, Airbus A380 modernization, and Starlink rollout form part of British Airways’ broader strategy to upgrade its premium customer experience across both ground services and onboard products.
While passengers at Newark will temporarily lose access to the Galleries Lounge during construction, the completed facility will introduce the airline’s newest lounge design philosophy to one of its most important North American gateways.
Combined with ongoing fleet improvements and enhanced onboard connectivity, these investments reflect British Airways’ continued focus on strengthening its long haul premium offering.
