LIBYA– Qatar Airways (QR) has received official approval to establish a branch in Libya, marking a significant milestone toward restoring scheduled air services between the two countries.
The authorization, announced by Libya’s Ministry of Economy and Trade, is expected to accelerate the operational processes required for the airline’s return to the Libyan market.
The move is seen as an important step in reconnecting Libya with the global aviation network after years of limited international connectivity.
While no launch date has been announced, the approval clears a major administrative hurdle for Qatar Airways to resume flights linking Doha and Tripoli through Tripoli International Airport (TIP).
Qatar Gets Approval to Fly Over Libya
Libya’s Ministry of Economy and Trade confirmed that Qatar Airways has been granted permission to open a local branch, allowing the airline to proceed with regulatory and operational preparations ahead of restarting passenger services.
According to the ministry, the decision forms part of a broader effort to improve the country’s business environment and encourage leading international companies to expand their presence in Libya.
Officials believe that easing administrative procedures will strengthen investor confidence and support ongoing economic reform initiatives.
Imad Ashour, Media Officer at the Ministry of Economy and Trade, said the approval reflects the government’s commitment to attracting foreign investment while simplifying regulatory processes.
He noted that welcoming a globally recognized airline back into the Libyan market demonstrates growing confidence in the country’s improving commercial environment.
The ministry also views the authorization as an important step toward reconnecting Libya with regional and international aviation networks, Libya Herald reported.
Re-establishing scheduled international flights is expected to improve travel options for passengers while supporting business activity across multiple sectors.
QR’s Flight Resumption
Although Qatar Airways has not announced an official timeline for restarting operations, opening a branch is a necessary requirement before commercial services can resume.
The airline must still complete operational, regulatory, and logistical procedures before flights are launched.
The eventual restoration of services would provide Libyan travelers with expanded access to Qatar Airways’ extensive global network through its hub at Hamad International Airport (DOH).
The carrier serves more than 170 destinations worldwide, making it one of the largest international airlines connecting Africa, Asia, Europe, the Americas, and Oceania.
The return of Qatar Airways would also strengthen Libya’s international aviation links, offering additional travel choices for business travelers, tourists, and transit passengers.
